By this, I mean throwing a fight which was basically a free win.

In terms of screwing up a win (not throwing/tanking), Terry Norris-Luis Santana 2

I guess hitting guys on the ground or behind the head wasn’t enough for Norris.

“Look, the ref is between us and talking to Santana….hit him!!”

I've watched the Lance Whitakker "KO" of Oleg Maskaev about 100 times. Only conclusion I can come to is that Oleg took a dive. I know he chin wasn't the greatest, but there's no way that flicking punch did that much damage.

Mark Gastineau-Dexter Dukes was comically bad. Dukes was on 60 Minutes showing exactly how he took the dive.

At the 8:33ish mark of this video you can see Maskaev take a hard right hand. Even though he was on his feet, the lights may have been out. Similar things have happened to other fighters like Frank Bruno and Michael Moorer in the foreman fault. The actual KO does look fishy because of how it ends with Maskaev's neck shoots back but they may have just been the last hit he needed due to being hurt by the aforementioned punch.

Just a guess, perhaps a dive, of course.

I have often thought this one was fixed too. I am friends with Banks on Facebook but have never had the courage to ask him about it. If you give me a dollar, maybe I will.

    Imagine him admitting it :lol::lol::lol:

I bring this fight up alot when I talk about the shattering of chins, even Lance Whitaker looked shocked.

It looks to me more like he felt Whitaker's power for real (from the right hand that wobbled him moments earlier) & elected to call it a day from a KD that he likely could've risen from if he really wanted (basically, he pulled a Spinks vs. Tyson).

Keep in mind that he was coming off a brutal KO loss to Kirk Johnson & was likely still suffering the effects of that both physically & mentally. A pre-Johnson Maskaev might've still had the desire & resilience to get up from that KD & attempt to keep fighting.

Incidentally, anyone remember prior to the Johnson KO, when HBO was relentlessly hyping Maskaev for his supposed iron chin after he withstood Rahman's punches all throughout their 1st fight?

I remember my father watching that fight on his own, & even w/o being exposed to all the online chatter after the fight, he was convinced that it was a fix.

I've always noticed the right hand that initially drove Oleg back. Good shot for sure, but on the punch that dropped him, looked to me like he jerked his head back on purpose to exaggerate the effects of the punch. The feeling around while laying on the canvas, almost like a guy just waking up and trying to find his alarm clock to shut it off, looked like bad acting to me. The final stumble into the corner was the cherry on top.

I know there are others on here who disagree with me on this, but I'm convinced Oleg took a dive in this one.

I agree that he looks to be acting, but that doesn't necessarily mean he entered the fight w/ the intention to lose - he may have only decided that after feeling Whitaker's power.

There was a specific time that Banks actually hurt Mitchell, and he just backed off for no reason. I wish I could remember what round it was.

Yes, I remember Lampley saying something like: Johnson took one look at Oleg's jawline and thought, there's no way I'm knocking him out.

When I heard that I remember thinking, someone didn't catch the McCall-Maskaev fight prior to that when Oleg was KO'd with the first solid shot. David Tua had already stopped him at that point as well.

Possible. Only Oleg, and possibly a few close to him, would really know.

I thought he was done as a serious contender after that. Was happy for the guy when he KO'd Rahman to win a strap.
