Would 154 be an acceptable weight for Martinez - Mayweather?

154 or 160 doesn't matter. 154 should be a non title fight unless Floyd is the 154 lb champ. Floyd better not try to pull that Leonard/ Lalonde **** if this fight is ever made.

Yes, both would be fine for the fight.

But if Mayweather wants to claim to be the 160 champion, then it has to happen at 160.. otherwise it is just bull-**** - and noone will recognize that he is 160 champion. Imagine Vitaly had to meet Haye at 190 for the Heavy weight title... Haye would prpbably win before the fight even started because Vitaly would be unconscious... but does that mean that Haye is really the HW champ..? No of course not.

Having said that... Mayweather will of course still get mad props for beating Sergio at 154, but he wont be 160 champ.

Unless Martinez fights at 154 while being a top option, as he has been over the past 3 years at 160, he will never be able to claim he was ducked by Floyd or Pac or anything later on in life.

That would be a relatively fair weight, although I think they should make it at 154 1/2 to put the lineal middleweight title on the line. Not that Floyd seems to care.

Martinez will b drained fighting @ 155 or below , he moved up 4 a reason and that reason was that he could barely / no longer maintain 154 . Y'd u think his team argued on d weight with Williams' team that wanted it lower ? there were talks about a catchweight between d 2 back then , weren't there ? Besides of Williams , Cintron and possibly a Margachito rematch , Martinez might have also get Cotto there , but he just couldn't b effective @ 154 no more . I object catchweights 4d title as well , and think that anything lower than 158 as a weighing in catchweight would b unfair 2 Martinez regardless of a title on stake . Martinez just shouldn't fight ppl of Pacquiao's and even of Mayweather's size . There r weight classes 4a reason .

Bull****. He moved up to fight Paul Williams, comptemplated dropping his MW title to move back down to 154 and refused to relinquish the WBC Interim belt he held at 154, which is one of the reasons why the WBO felt they could get away with stripping him.

    154 is perfect.

After Floyd wins the beklt of Cotto, they then have a belt to fight for.

Martinez is a natural light middle.

The guy weighed 157 on the scales against Macklin.

When Duran challenged Hagler he did so at 160, as did Leonard and hearns.
When napoles challenged Monzon he did so at 160 as did Griffith.
When Tito challenged Hopkins he did so at 160.
When Robinson challenged la motta he did so at 160.

Granted de la Hoya asked for a catchweight.

The idea of a mw champion moving down to lmw to face a lmw champion is pretty much unprecedented. it basically puts Martinez in a win-win situation. If he beats Floyd he's p4p number 1 in a huge risk fight against the best lmw. If he loses, well he's drained and no mw champ before him as had the balls to try what he tried.

Not sure how much credit I'd give to Floyd if he won this fight. As I say it's pretty much unheard of in history for the mw champ to move down and challenge the lmw champ.

remember whats important here isnt who holds a belt or what history has shown, but the natural size of the fighter moving up

tito, for example, looked the part of a MW when he destroyed joppy and handed mayorga his first KO loss - and him losing to hopkins had less to do with tito moving up, than hopkins being a better technician.

he beat him to the punch, broke him down and was the better fighter

with floyd, it's all about the weight because of where he's come from

I doubt you'll ever see a smaller mw challenger than gavilan, Armstrong nor napoles. Size didnt stop them moving up.
