    Random comparison.

After tonights destruction of Miguel Cotto by Manny Pacquiao, if it were to ever come off, would a Floyd-Pac showdown be bigger than the Mike Tyson-Michael Spinks HW showdown in terms of hype and media attention?

    Discuss.

No i'd say, Tyson - Spinks was a heavyweight fight for starters.

No; Tyson and to a lot lesser point Spinks, were worldwide superstars. Only boxing fans and enthusiastic sports fans (outside of their own countries) have heard of either Lil Floyd or Manny.

How many English schoolkids, for example, do you think will be talking about a potential Pac-Floyd fight tomorrow morning?

Bigger? Nah, doubt it, not arsed either way. Bigger for the pure boxing fan? Why not? These are the two best fighters of the generation on a coilision course, and they're not **** fighters in comparison to yesteryear, i'm not having that.

Manny is overhyped here on ESB classic even. #10 p4p last 40 years :rofl

until Paq gets big enough to go on Barbara Walters and starts doing Kodak commercials, his fights wont get that level of recognition

It won't be bigger, but it certainly would be more significant and competitive. Then again, only in hindsight, Tyson-Spinks was a mismatch..... i guess leading up to the fight, it was somewhat significant. But Floyd is still the master at 147, while Spinks had been inactive for two or three years and dropping his belt not to fight Tucker, not to mention that he should've lost to Holmes in the rematch.

Sorry to say, but Michael Spinks was a bum compared to Mike Tyson's popularity.

He is considered p4p #2 (and #1 by many, before yesterday) and fights at welterweight... sometimes at higher weight. No, he hasn't beaten Cotto/Margarito/Mosley, but he certainly looked better. I agree that he hasn't proven to be the clear #1 at WW, but i think he'd beat Mosley rather comfortably and shut out Margarito. Cotto would probably be the hardest fight due to styles - in 2007, i saw it as 50/50, but right now i'm not sure if Cotto is the same fighter he was two years ago...

Oh, and i also think he'd handily beat Pac on points. 8-4 or something. Basically a bigger version of Marquez with an iron chin.

Mayweather hasn't faced a TRUE welterweight for 3 years (Carlos Baldomir), beat only Hatton and Marquez at 147 in the meantime, and was officially in retirement from Nov.2007 until summer 2009.
Marquez (a 135 pounder AT MOST really) is his only win in the last 2 years.

That puts him well in the Michael Spinks - 1987-'88 - territory for me. Precisely where you were arguing he is NOT, anyway. Just my take on it.
