Would a Floyd-Pac showdown be bigger than the Tyson-Spinks superfight?

Yes it will be. Like Spinks Tyson at the time its the biggest fight in boxing. Manny and Floyd are crossover stars. Not necessarily only in America, but big enough to make a fight bigger than Tyson Spinks with the global attention it will get. I hope Floyd is up for it, theres certainly enough money to be made.

    No.

Neither fighter is anywhere close to as popular as Tyson was. At the time, Tyson was the most recognizable athlete the world over.

There are key differences between PBF and Spinks:

    1. Spinks lost to Holmes in the rematch, but got a bogus decision. Doesn't really add much credibility.

    2. Floyd, although having been retired for 2 years, has beaten top level opponents at that weight ever since.

Like i said: he's not proven to be the #1 welter at this moment, but which 147'er would you pick over him?

Three fights ago, Mayweather didn't exactly impress in that fake and contrived "mega-fight" with Oscar DeLaHoya.

:huh He's beaten Marquez. That's all. A guy who fights at 130-135 pounds.

I wouldn't outright pick anyone over him. But I'd have picked no one except Tyson to outright beat Spinks in 1988 either, and even Tyson I wasn't anywhere near certain.

You see either fighter getting a $40 million purse for this fight? Just the purse I mean.

Because thats what Tyson made in todays money for that fight...I reckon it could push it close.

Both guys would be looking at $20 million+ purses.

At least he won it. Spinks didn't win his rematch with Holmes. I can't believe you don't want to concede this.

At what weight did they fight? In what weight class was (is) Mayweather rated?

Who would you have picked over Tyson in '88? Who would you pick NOW over Mayweather ? See the point?

Concede what ? I know Spinks went in to the Tyson fight with somewhat shaky credentials as measured by his recent form (the previous 2 1/2 years). Exactly what you pointed out first off, and I never disagreed. I'm pointing out that Mayweather's form of the last 2 1/2 years features nothing particularly substantial either.

    Welterweight ..... and what's your point ?
Spinks was fighting at heavyweight against full-blown career-long heavyweights. I mean, Cooney was a dubious opponent, but I do not think a middleweight or light-heavy would have been a better one.

    No.

The only point I'm making is that Spinks was a highly rated fighter, pound-for-pound, at the time. Just as Mayweather and Pacquaio are. Spinks had holes in his recent credentials though, as has Mayweather.

For example, in the May 1988 issue of KO magazine, in their pound-for-pound ratings, Mike Tyson is rated at #1, and Michael Spinks is rated at #2

That's a pretty strong parallel, if you ask me.
