I'm just asking because then maybe we might see him step in the ring with Mosley, Clottey , Cotto, Berto or even PW if he could ever get back to WW. I just think it would be a great opportunity to watch him fight in this weight class against stiff opposition. The smaller weight classes are cute but this is where he should establish his legacy.

Wouldn't he CEMENT his Legacy though? You think he would "retire", again??

I don't think losing to Marquez would. Maybe Pacquiao. That's the biggest fight out there and it needs to happen should they both win. And Mayweather is boxing's villain. It definitely brings in more viewers with the fact he's undefeated and people hate him so much they want to see him lose.

Yes, HBO everytime they do a 24/7 is to build up the fight for a mainstream "casual" fan audience....thus, they build up the underdog like he is mother teresa......the built up hatton against floyd, as the second coming of christ......similar with marquez this time....

I'm not certain but if a casual fan catch the 24/7's they will buy the PPV to see if the underdog shocks the world....if it happens, more boxing fans....if not casual fans go home unhappy....

First off I truly believe that Floyd is a gifted fighter. It's not dumb!
Do you watch boxing at all ??

Pac losing wouldn't mean anything! The excuses are already starting: too small, training in Phillipines, blah blah blah. Besides I don't see him staying around Welterweight and fighting anyone in the Division. Which is why as a fan I remember watching Leonard-Hagler-Hearns-Duran. Guys that challenged each other and had some Boxing matches that are unparalleled today!

You don't think a PBF vs. (insert Welterweight here) match would be fun to watch ? Or is PBF that good that he would make everyone in Welter look that Bad?

  9. It would if he lost to Pacquiao

Very good question. I think it all depends. If Floyd takes a loss, it may spark something in him to take on big names like Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto, which would obviously be good for boxing. Now, if Floyd wins, he may still take on a top guy like Manny Pacquiao, which would, of course, be good for boxing. Basically, Mayweather, no matter what you think of him, is a big enough name that if he fights the right guy, can do tremendous things for our sport.

But to answer the question...a PBF loss would in the long run, NOT be better for boxing than a PBF win, because he is younger, more popular, and can draw in bigger names because of his size compared to JMM, if nothing else.

When I say his size, I mean he has a higher weight flexibility than JMM. I mean, JMM couldn't fight Shane Mosley or Paul Williams, but Mayweather can. Its similar to the way Oscar De La Hoya could fight Bernard Hopkins, but obviously, Manny Pacquiao couldn't...but Oscar and Manny could fight each other.

    **** yeah!!!

It would bring PBF back to earth with a bang and deflate his stupidly enormous ego that he has preserved by avoiding risky opponents (i.e. opponents true boxing fans want him to fight) ever since me moved up from 135.

But I think a loss would see him retire once again with his tail between his legs.

He stopped caring about a legacy (if he ever cared in the first place) a looooong time ago.

Of course it won't be good, that's like saying Pac losing to Cotto would be good for boxing.

Everyone knows Mayweather/Pacquiao is THE fight to make and the biggest BY FAR.

Why not?, he signed to have 5 fights right?

Wasn't he the one to call out Cotto and Hatton at 140 only to be turned down and called out Mosley at 147 to get turned down as well?

Some idiots here can be confusing. You guys make it look like Mayweather is fighting by force. This is a 5 weight division champion, undefeated, ATG abilities, fighter of the year 2007(the same year ******s claimed Margarito is the most feared cockorach) and 1998, lineal champion in 3 divisions, P4P#1 for 2 years topping guys like Pacman/Cotto/Mosley/Hopkins/Calzaghe/Vasquez and other elites on the list. Why the hell would he "never" fight those guys when he CLEARLY will after his next fight?

Wake me up when "gladiators" like Cotto, who is also fighting a smaller man next, become lineal champion(s) in at least ONE division.

Pacquiao said he plans to retire after fighting Mayweather while Mayweather signed a 5 fight deal. You sure it will be better for the sport?
