Without a question. Calzaghe might win a few rounds.

I would say that Calzaghe would win a close decision

    1. People say Hopkins slowed Calzaghe down and made him fight his fight, & to a degree thats true but if thats completely so look at Hopkins workrate against Wright in his fight before Calzaghe and against Pavlik in his fight after & see whos workrate really dropped, remember it was Hopkins looking for timeout & faking low blows

    2. People talk about the knockdowns he suffered, but he always got up to win, something Hopkins and Jones couldnt always manage and when Calzaghe was put down who was it who still continued to make the fight and throw punches? Calzaghe

    3. Lesser fighters than Calzaghe went the distance with Jones and Calzaghe had a very good chin, remember the uppercut landed by Jones at the end of the 6th round in their fight, it was as good a punch as any Jones has thrown and looked alot harder than the one which put Joe down & Calzaghe walked through it throwing shots

    4. Except maybe J Ruiz due to his natural size, theres no one on Jones resume that I could see beating Calzaghe, I dont think Calzaghes physique could put on heavy muscle like Jones, but in truth theres no one on Calzaghes resume I could see losing to a prime Jones either

    5. Jones career has a question mark over PEDs

    6. Calzaghe has a higher workrate and M Griffin who is smaller and less talented than Calzaghe gave Jones problems 1st time round, walking Jones into corners. If Calzaghe was walking Jones into corners he would have been throwing fast combinations

I think Calzaghe would have won a close decision prime for prime against Jones

    1. Hopkins was 40 ****ing years old, actually older that that!!!!! Taylor beat him the same exact way Calzaghe did but only prior and at hopkins best weight, but never touched the canvas :deal

    4. Wow, that is quite a statement considering the only two guys Calzaghe fought at Lt Heavy was a 40yr old career middleweight and an old washed up Jones, but no light heavyweight on Jones's resume could beat Calzaghe  Ok. Prime Hopkins and Prime James Toney wouldn't beat Calzaghe? The ignorance here is absolutely laughable.

I have to disagree. Calzaghe had ups and downs in terms of his performances during his career, and I can see why someone would say his best performances/prime was before he had hand troubles. But his peak, and best performance was against Lacey in my opinion. He was at the top of his game at this point, experience etc. Like you said, some people say his best performance came at the end of his career, but I thought he peaked that night, which for me was his prime. Even though his best win came after that against Kessler.

Same goes for Hatton. His best performance was against Tszyu, he peaked that night and never produced a better performance. The Hatton we seen that night was a prime Hatton.

Jones knocked Calzaghe down in their fight.
I think prime Jones would knock Joe out so Joe's
work rate would not count much.

so what if he did? plus it was a forearm?

joe wasnt a slapper in his prime before the lacy fight, roy jones wouldnt ko calzaghe, a decision win for him most likely but it wouldnt have surprised me if calzaghe won

i just wish calzaghe was over hyped like roy jones was

The thing is that Jones was superior in speed in his prime while
Calzaghe was not much better than at the time he fought Jones.

Calzaghe style work perfectly against people with limited or
average speed and technique but the prime Jones' speed would
make big difference. If the slow and aging Jones was able to
knock Calzaghe down then the prime and light-fast Jones would do
the same and would be able to do this more constantly over the time.

Forget handspeed. Jones's strength, movement, unpredictability, angles, unorthodox attack, foot speed would all be way too much for the easy to hit calzaghe

    1. Taylor beat him the same way without going down, but Taylor was badly hurt 1st time late on and looking like he could get stopped, also Hopkins came on strong late on against Taylor, something he didnt or couldnt do against Calzaghe

    4. Sure Hopkins spent most of his career at MW but did start his career at LHW, having his 4th fight at the weight to Joes 1st and regardless of his age he was the premier LHW and Ring champ, who was Calzaghe meant to go up in weight and fight? The no.2?
Toney who was weight drained at SMW when fighting Jones allegedly or who lost twice to the small no punching M Griffin, Or prime Hopkins, but which prime Hopkins? The one who lost his debut, the one who lost to Jones, the one who got put down twice and only drew with Mercado, the one who lost to Taylor twice, the one who Calzaghe beat or the one who put on one of his best performances beating Pavlik after losing to Calzaghe?, Surely you dont think the Hopkins who lost to Jones is better than the one who beat Pavlik, yes younger but not as experienced or physically as strong I wouldnt have thought
