IF IT HAD BEEN A UNDEAFEATED COONEY IN THERE AGAINST LISTON, INSTEAD OF ALI, WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE RESULT?
A OVERCONFIDENT, UNDER TRAINED LISTON, PERHAPS SEEING COONEY AS BIG LUG TO BATTER, IS THIS ACTUALLY WHAT HAPPENS? OR COULD COONEY ACTUALLY RIP IN TO LISTON AND SCORE A MASSIVE UPSET?

Liston couldn't lose to Cooney even if he was trying to.

Maybe not a fully trained fit version of liston. That version destroys cooney in 5 painful rounds. The liston of later years wasn't the greatest for keeping in shape. Cooney could bang hard and fast in his younger years. Just seeing if in a possible scenario, where cooney gets liston from the first bell and pounds away. I've actually voted for liston but give Jerry a slight under dogs chance.

I don't like the Cooney defense whatsoever against this opponent's punches. That jab alone would move Cooney all over the ring. And then trying to re-set himself. And Cooney's best punch--that left hook is only marginally better than Sonny's. But Liston could throw his off his jab. Cooney couldn't. And then we get down to right hands and that comparison is not close.

Cooney needs some Klitschko or Lewis legs to stay out of harms way against this guy. As it is, he'd be right in front of Liston at all times. Horrible place to be for Gerry and just how long does he absorb punishment before he goes? I sure don't see Sonny missing punches and I sure don't think Gerry slips anything.

Good post and interesting analysis. Cooney doesn't really stand up well against any strong, dominant punchers. Despite having a punch like a mule kicks himself, I don't see him Lasting a round against a prime tyson or foreman. The only reason I picked this version of liston, was because of his advanced age.,and also if he'd been meeting cooney in place of Ali, he'd have had just 2 round s in two years. I don't believe liston would have seen cooney as a threat despite his punching power. He may have come in under trained and over confident. That's the only gerry I see in with a chance, however slim.

Actually an interesting matchup. One that I've never seen here before. I'd favor Liston, but I wouldn't count Cooney out completely. The one that took Norton out in 54 seconds and folded Ron Lyle in half might pull the upset against the Liston that fought Clay.

No. Liston was frustrated by young Ali's blazing speed of foot and hand. Cooney would be right there to be hit. Liston was durable. Cooney never was. Liston by KO.

Liston real prime was early 60's . However the Liston of Miami still too
powerful for Cooney as Liston like most punchers his weakness was
slick boxers. Liston demolishes Cooney in 3 rounds.

Funny how ppl dismiss the 6'6 Cooney who was a better fighter than Williams who gave liston a fight and was actually winning in one of them....

Cooney would K.O liston no different than he did Norton or lyle.

i would guess Cooney has a 70% chance of winning this one.

Left hook was not the punch to use with frequency vs Liston. The punch was a right hand which Cooney did not possess.

Liston kept his right held high and had one punch KO power in both fists. Cooney tries to end it early but is countered. First solid blow by Liston ends the fight.

The fight in Miami was not legitimate, however, Sonny at that point was well past his prime. Age and conditioning matter, and that intangible 'hunger.' I'll pick an undefeated, in shape Cooney to have a very good chance against that version of Liston.
