After the Holmes fight, even his managers couldn't get him in the ring. Jones got fed and left him. If Gerry wanted to fight, he could have. He just wanted no truck with fighting contender (even 1) to get to the top. Sorry bud, but Gerry Cooney is responsible for his own failures and NO ONE ELSE. Go on believing he was a hero, you're only fooling yourself. I remember all the newspaper and magazine articles and news reports like yesterday. Cooney would have refused to even face Sonny. No matter what Cooney fans think, history proves otherwise.

I explained the Foreman fight earlier. I am not trying to argue with you, just stating facts. Hey, 2 fighters I saw live a lot in the early 80s were Frank Fletcher and Mustafa Hamsho. I loved their styles but I don't try to say they would beat Robinson, or Monzon. They were limited and I accept that. And they fought the best. Your guy wouldn't, but you have him beating the greatest Sonny List on. Watch Gerry fight, awkward, telegraphed overrated power that never hurt a contender. Witherspoon x no great himself almost r as n him out of the gym. In modern society x the Cooney name in boxing is considered a joke. As in, "He's (some new white fighter, undefeated) not another Cooney is he?"

The Liston that this thread is all about, the one that quit against Clay was hardly the greatest.

As I said in the beginning, ever a dead Listons arm beats Cooney. And, it took ALI to beat that List on. I would bet February 1964 List on wipes out 95% of the heavyweights in history. EASILY! And no gutless bum named Cooney has chance against Sonny.

No one can truly say they are so knowledgeable and, believe that. He never, ever fought a contender much less beat one. If he were a country during times of heavy warfare among real contenders, Cooney would be Switzerland. He is a black stain on the honor of all fighters and is thought of that way through out history. HE'S A BUM!!!!!!!

The foot and hand speed was the difference with Ali -Liston 1&2. Cooney didn't possess anything close to that ability. Even that version of Liston would be able to get to Cooney, even prime Cooney. And personally I think Holmes intimidated Cooney a little before their fight. Imagine what Liston would be able to do. Plus Cooney wouldn't have the Nation of Islam threatening to kill him if he won lol.

Would u rate Bruno as much as a bum as cooney? That's the knock against Bruno, that he never fought a live contender. And yet he shook up a young undefeated Tyson!. OK he didn't beat him, but it proves that anyone can be shook, hurt, rattled. And yet you insist that a young, in his prime, very hard hitting guy couldn't do anything? I'm not arguing the case for cooney winning.. But dont say he hadn't a chance in hell. The liston that Ali beat had seen better days, he wasn't a young fit guy anymore. He probably didn't even train that hard for him. And some times in boxing, has Douglas, sanders, ingo, mccall all shows us, the impossible can happen. Put two guys together in a ring and anything can happen, what ever the odds.

Can't believe this thread even sparked much debate.
Cooney wouldn't stand a chance. Liston's several levels above him. Even the worst version of Liston would destroy Cooney.
