jones has some great achievements in boxing - his brilliance at the 88 olympics - outclassing toney - beating bernard - winning the heavyweight title would a victory over calzaghe at this stage of his career be his greatest achievement of them all?
Well... HW title means little IMO, it was just an alphabet title vs. a relatively small, very slow, handpicked opponent. Bernard was young and green back then, you can't say Roy beat the BHop we'll remember. The Olympic achievement was great, even better as we all know he was cheated. But the Toney win was the huge one. JT was the champ and P4P#2 at the time, and his career moved on after the loss just like BHop's. Also Jones' victory over Hill was special although when Hill unified, before Roy, he lost, and the LHW lineal title went to Michalczewski, therefore Roy never bacame lineal or undisputed champ. Since Michalczewski-Gonzalez-Erdei is the history of LHW linealige, a win over Calzaghe at 175 still would mean that Roy hasn't won an undisputed title in his whole career. But given the recent odds on his win, Joe's P4P place (usually #2) and Joe's resume (SMW run, being undiputed there, win over BHop), a win would mean a lot. Up there with Toney.
It would be Roy's first win over a legit champion in his whole career. Roy has never beat a linear, undisputed, or unified champion in his whole career.
i am sure to jones it would be,lets be honest he is a shadow of his former self ,so if he can pull off a calz win he would be feeling great again and that would probably feel like the greatest victory for him. and would line up a great hopkins jones showdown. but lets get real it aint going to happen.
Joe is neither lineal, nor undisputed and especially not a unified champ since he holds only The Ring title which was given away despite the lineal champ was someone else. But in this case, P4P and ATG status > belts.
It would rank up there with playing basketball in the morning and winning a fight later in the evening.
