In this era where fighters like Rigondeaux, Ward, and Mayweather are called runners for using the entire ring, and optimizing their footwork, it makes me wonder would Ali be considered a runner if he fought today? He used the ring more than anyone, and that blueprint was pretty much created by him.

OR are we just in such a dumb downed era of boxing that the public thinks that boxing matches are supposed to be Rocky movies, filled with no defense, no movement, punch drunk action?

    Discuss.

People who call Rigo, Ward and Mayweather runners don't know boxing and in their ignorance might also incorrectly call Ali a runner.

A quick scan of the ESB archives says yes, a portion of the ignorant posters that DKSAB would be frothy-mouthed Ali haters who would call him dumb isht like 'Mo-Homo Ali' or 'Cassius Gay' or simply a runner.

I'm not sure if anyone actually uses the term "Runner"... There are outside-fighters? Then again.. Maybe an outside-fighter with a low work rate is a runner.

All this being said.. I think Ali was too active at times to be considered a full-blown runner. I do think he would be considered a Spoiler at times.. instead of choosing to engage he chooses to disengage or clinch.

    Great thread bro!

Thats the kind of boxing world we live in now. People would call Ali a runner in this era, and thats dumb as HELL!!!

Most people just talk out there ass and know its not running but use the hate they have for certain boxers to say they are. Its called boxing damn it

Some of you really have your head up your ass about Ali.

He consistently back-tracked which made him look like he was running.

Not too difficult to understand why some would call him a "runner"!

Ali was willing to engage. The fighters you mentioned the issue isn't their 'running' it is the reluctance to throw punches. Ali would probably be more criticized for his clinching and holding behind the head than 'running'.

At least in Sweden where they don´t know what dancing, bob and weave, slip and slide, head and body movement is. "Stand still and fight, hold your guard up, take two to deliver one" - that is the style they use here and don´t forget that the jab is a useless punch in boxing. "toptrainers" in Sweden has this opinion.
This is true and you hear how stupid it is.
People with this attitude don´t know what boxing is.

Ali did a lot of running, holding, pushing a boxer's head down, etc., He broke a lot of rules by got away with it. When Ali fought Henry Cooper he was out on his feet, Angelo Dundee admitted that he cut Ali's glove to keep from getting knocked out. Ali at his best did very well, but after his layoff he was never the same fighter. He did not always train properly for a fight, came in over weight as well.
