Andre Ward got away with a lot of illegal tactics such as head butts, low blows, holding his opponents' arms, etc. He should have been DQed in his fight in Oakland against Kessler. Kovalev was robbed in their first fight.

He refused to travel and fight in other countries during the Super Six because he relied heavily on dodgy home officials.

Would he have been as successful without his dirty tactics and dishonest officials?

He would be successful. AS successful? Probably not.

Honestly that might improve his legacy more than hurt it. He would've been more likely to fight the best, his wins would have less *'s, sure he would probably lose a fight or two but I think overall it would've boosted his career imo. Maybe I'm just overthinking this but I personally don't care about a fighter being undefeated

Undefeated record isn't respected by people when there are robberies on it anyway.

If you force him to have exact same career but without the corruption then he loses a few fights.

The only fight i see him losing on fouls is the second Kovalev fight

He would have lost the Kovalev fight, but that's pretty much it

This is beyond sad. Wards career is over and he was a fantastic fighter. It's time to stop thinking about hypotheticals regarding his career

As in the case of Wlad (I guess that was your inspiration for this topic), so in the case of Ward I blame the refree more than the boxers.
Of course we all know that headbut, elbows, holding, biting ... are not allowed in boxing.
The boxer fights within the rules allowed by the refree.
According to the rules, the refree should first warn the boxer if he repeats illegal tactics to take away one point, and finally disqualify him if he continues with illegal tactics.
I think the same or worse about the judges.
What does victory mean to you, if everyone except the judges saw that you lost?
The boxer shows his helplessness, lack of morals with illegal tactics ...
It harms boxing itself, and the consequences are obvious. This irritates boxing fans.
Boxing should, in theory, be something of a knightly skill, but it hasn’t been for a long time.
That's why I like the understanding of boxing from 100 years ago.

There's absolutely no case for Andre Ward winning 6 rounds let alone 7 against Kovalev in the first fight. That's one loss there.

People like to brush off his illegal tactics... "B.. B.. Bb. Ut.. Ali did it..." yeah...he held grabbed people around the head and that was illegal, point is?

He would probably have won all but the 2 Kova fights (there had only been one probably).

His fight with Greene was one big foul from opening to closing bell, but he would have beaten him without fouling too.
Kessler might have been an NC though.

But we can go on with topics on this with B-Hop, Ali, Ruiz, Holyfield and such. Ward was clearly one of the worst in breaking the rules though. And usually without actually needing to.
