I honestly believe it would have been a very close fight, one of those could could have gone either way.

Calzaghe was very good but he had some really scratchy performances, he wasn't always the Calzaghe we saw beat Jeff Lacy.

I think people remember that Lacy performance/fight and imagine Calzaghe turned up like that for every fight, I have to add.. Jeff Lacy wasn't that great anyway.

I thought I posted here earlier but it seems it didn’t go through..

Hard to call, would be a very close, competitive fight…..

….and one of the most boring slogs of a fight we’d ever witness.

I agree with those who say it depends on whether the fight was in Oakland.

If Ward could get away with the mauling, it is a competitive fight.

It all depends on the ref. If the ref let's Ward fight like he did against Kessler and Froch, then Ward would win. If Calzaghe is allowed to box, he wins on points by volume of punches.

Deffo one for the purists I think - both are great at adaptating during a fight, and both have very high ring IQ.

As others have noted a lot of this would come down to what Ward could get away with, but Joe was no shrinking violet in their, and IMO handled a younger & fresher Bika better than Ward did - and no one is dirtier than Bika!

IMO the best Zags beats the best Ward, and generally Calzaghe turned up for the big fights.

There would be move / counter-move, possibly multiple times and the fight would ebb & flow.

I think the championship rounds would be what would tell with Zags engine & volume combined with angles and footwork see him take over an increasingly tired and frustrated Ward.

60/40 Zags for me, and it probably would have been a stinker - likely not a lot different form Calz / Hopkins tbh

Really kovalev looked to be giving Ward all kinds of trouble with just the jab
I really don't think it would be competitive
Prime Calzaghe with a clear win, whether on points or inside schedule
At SMW Ward didn't face any top prime undefeated SMWs

Ward would win easily. Calzaghe was a volume fighter, a relentless slapper. Some of his slomo combinations from that Hopkins fight would be bad form for someone who just walked into a boxing gym for the first time.

Why do they have to be ‘undefeated’? Kessler and Froch were at their best when Ward beat them. He beat Kessler far more easily than Calzaghe did, and that was early in Ward’s career. You can’t compare Kovalev to Calslappy.

    Why would you think that?
    Would Ward take the fight?

    All based on what?
Who's to say Ward would take the fight?
Ward was facing fighters a faded Calzaghe had already beaten, didn't travel abroad in world title fights like Calzaghe did and didn't show interest in facing boxer movers ie Bute, Degale, Dirrell

Kessler wasn't at his best, he had eye problems and not been as active as well as Calzaghe showing the blueprint

Calzaghe beat Bika more easily than Ward did and that was earlier in Wards career, so much so that when you are comparing Calzaghe beating Kessler or Bika it was when Joe was at the end of a long SMW career and years older than what Ward would be when he chose to retire
Yes that's right, at the age Calzaghe was winning those fights, Ward would have been retired for years
