Patterson had SOME punches quicker than Ali. Holmes was not close to pre-exile Ali's speed. Close in '70's in speed, but still Ali coming in shape at least edges Holmes.
Ali would have confused and bewlidered Holmes. Holmes was a great fighter but he didn't have what it took physically or mentally to beat ali but the reverse was true. Holmes had a great jab but so did Ali and plus Ali had the right hand to neutralize holmes jab. He also had better and faster legs, faster hands, was more resourceful and was better at thinking for himself in the ring. I doubt that Ali knocks out holmes or scores a tko but he definitely wins a comfortable decision winning about 10 rounds.
Ali pre vietnam was better than the Ali who returned and fought Frazier, Foreman etc. His reflexes and speed of hand and foot had never been seen in a big man before and have never been matched since. Ali wins but in a good competitive contest as Holmes was an atg heavyweight.
Holmes had handspeed on the level of Ali and his jab was a superior offensive weapon. I also believe Larry was also the stronger puncher, as well as being physically stronger all around. I'd pick Holmes
I'm thinkin' you've been into the strong waters again, mo buchaill, talkin to the Johns. John Walker or John Barleycorn. Maybe John Jameson ? Or could you just be havin' a little fun ?
Huh? Holmes once crawled away from an opponent after a KD. He was mentally strong, but I can see no reason to think he matches Ali's mental prowess, let alone exceeds it. Would Holmes fight a liston near blind until his eyes cleared?
This is a very feasible assessment...Holmes would definitely give Ali all he could handle. I would still lean towards the very best Ali winning this fight.
I have Prime Foreman edging Prime Holmes in a fight . Ali on the other hand beats Holmes without a doubt .
