Speed, accuracy and power that just came out of nowhere. You watch these Kovalevs, these bivols, these berbetevs, then you go take another look at a prime roy Jones and it's like watching a different sport. Jones was a True ATG, a guy who was one of the most skilled fighters of all time. I feel like nowadays these fans hand out the ATG label to any half decent fighter pretty much. It's pathetic. Anyways Jones wrinses current 175 and makes all those guys look like average bums, and he does it EASY.
I think there's definitely guys that would trouble him. I think that goes without saying. I couldn't make anyone a favourite over him though.
This should be in the classic section with a bunch of overrated roided up western boxers of the past.
This statement doesn't make any sense. You think that the modern LHW's would beat him on the grounds that he fought a lot of low level opposition at the weight? You're supposed to be looking hypothetically at how his style would mesh with the aforementioned fighters. Also, most of the guys mentioned by the TS didn't beat opponents that were any better than who Roy beat at the weight. Roy beat: Montell Griffin Reggie Johnson Clinton Woods Virgil Hill Richard Hall Eric Harding Antonio Tarver I like Bivol and Beterbiev etc, today's division is currently thriving. But as of yet, who have they beaten? Who has Kovalev beaten? His best wins are over Cleverley, Pascal and a near 50 year old Bernard Hopkins who was in survival mode. Kovalev would have sent him into another dimension? Well we know that he certainly has the power needed to have taken Roy out. That goes without saying. But would he have had the perfect opportunity to have landed his power shots? He couldn't send Andre Ward into another dimension after having 2 attempts. Roy's incredible speed and unorthadox style would have given him a far bigger puzzle to solve than Ward, and we saw Ward break him down both mentally and physically.
With someone as poorly defensively as Roy was, anything could happen. Guys like him and Mosley relied on their reflexes as defense and that leaves a lot of openings when you face a fighter who is willing to throw when Roy was dropping laser fast 6 punch combos. Most fighters didn't and tried waiting until Roy already got off.
Beterbiev kills him? Based on what? Those guys haven't done anything yet for them to have been favoured over Roy.
Ive always believed, and still do, that a completely primed Kovalev gives Roy problems and it wouldn't suprise me if he could pull it off. But Im talking a peak peak prime Kova.
His peak was definitely at SMW. He was still impressive up at LHW though. Wins over Griffin, Hill and Reggie were certainly impressive.
I'm a big fan of Andre Dirrell's. The only issue, is that he's not the strongest mentally. He really could have beaten Froch with ease. We also saw what happened against Abraham. IMHO, I don't think he'd have had the belief that he could have beaten Roy. But from a stylistic point of view, it would have been a very bad match up for Roy. Andre's a great talent who's underachieved.
