I mean just look at some picks of him http://static.boxrec.com/c/ca/Walcott.Joe.jpg http://static.boxrec.com/4/43/Walcott_Barbados_Joe_6.jpg 5'1" and KOing heavyweights. Just insane.
Rolando Garza, who was a welterweight at the time, knocked out mexican heavyweight Tyson Marquez with sparring gloves.
No, I am sure that him, and Langford, and a whole host of other fighters would have had the finger pointed at them. Just shows that you have to be careful.
I do wonder if he had something like this though that caused his muscularity. https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/myostatin-related-muscle-hypertrophy
Im no expert on Walcott so correct me if Im wrong but wasnt the only “heavyweight” he KOd Joe Choynski, who would probably be a middleweight today and who came into the fight with a broken rib which resulted in or contributed to the stoppage? Beyond that I cant find where he even beat another “heavyweight” much less stopped one. Certainly not one of any class or note. Correct me if Im wrong because Im legitimately asking.
his build looks normal to me too. Nothing unusual about his build that would make one think he was taking PEDs.
I point to those pictures above and others from this era whenever people tell me that modern boxers are more athletic with better conditioning. Guys like Joe Walcott or Young Peter Jackson are physically as impressive looking as anyone today.
Depends what you consider impressive. He looks pretty muscular, but nothing huge at all. There is no reason that he would be accused of PED usage today just due to appearance. Which is characterized by relatively (or more) extreme muscle mass, sometimes with much definition, often not...And also very fast muscular gains, at least after already strong/not a skinny kid. I also do not buy that most everyone is a drug cheat. Many do, but nobody ever gives reasonable evidence of roughly what percentage uses-or has dabbled in PEDs. That is a fascinating genetic condition, & very rare. Barbados Joe looks normal. With the Myostatin disorder, you might have a toddler who can do chin ups. The reason this must be so rare is that they are very low bodyfat & require constant calories/fuel. Which did not tend to be so readily available for most of human history. But this is the one natural condition I am aware of where the effects can be as dramatic as years of PED usage.
