jackson was one of fitz's teachers.

sullivan was a much better version of goddard, see joe choynski's thoughts on that.

sullivan ruined kilrain, so slavin feasting on john l's leftovers is moot.

sullivan ducked the late 80's and early 90's contenders. they came to that point after sullivan's marked decline.

    jackson has a great resume.

    A few other points...

Sullivan damn neared killed Kilrain during their bout. Jake was never the same.

Choynski picked the old, dissipated version of Sullivan to beat Jackson in rather short order.

As far as ducking contenders, Sullivan was essentially retired after the Kilrain fight. He had wrecked himself with alcohol and continuous touring, had drank himself into a coma at least once and endured typhoid fever (1888) during which doctors had twice declared him hopeless and which for a time left him paralyzed. Those who knew him well, like Mike Donovan, said he was a mere shadow of his former self after that illness.

Fighters were taking part in "legal" or "semi-legal" matches for over half a century before Sullivan appeared on the scene. There had been a lot of gloved fighting (both exhibition-like and serious boxing) in New York and other big cities for at least a couple of decades before John L., including by famous (back then, now forgotten though) names. That didn't make gloved boxing popular. I'm not sure it would have become popular for another decade or two if not for Sullivan.

I'd probably rate John L.Sullivan and Peter Jackson among the top 10 or top 15, possibly top 5.
