Would appreciate any thoughts on my all time lineal heavyweight list

I've definitely missed some as I have three less than the OP but I can't figure out who they are or how I've lost them but other than that, here's my go:

He was lineal when he beat Ali in 1980.

 

Good list but i would have Jack Johnson higher

 

Think that's what's confused a few here.

 

Ha,ha, you gotta have been on crack, ferguson if you think that someone would really have put Hart as no.1 and Ali at the bottom.

 

Most of it doesn't ring any bells for me ,but your list is as valid as anyone else's ,we are all just fans here .

 

I think you missed Gene Tunney and Buster Douglas

My defense of Sharkey.

The argument as to who was the worst lineal heavyweight champion, should really be confined to men who only have one or two really good wins, or perhaps three at the most.

A champion with a handful of good wins rises above the argument, and in Sharkey's case he has an embarrassment of really good wins.

Indeed he beat more ranked contenders than some of the greatest heavyweight champions.

Some will point to the fact that he was inconsistent, and he was, but that comes with a big caveat.

Between late 1925 and late 1931, he went 20-3-2, with his only losses coming to Jack Dempsey, Johny Risko and Max Schmeling, which is actually a remarkable level of consistency.

He was fighting the best regularly over this period, and only losing to the very best.

Most of his losses came when he was either very green and overmatched, or clearly on the slide.

Muldoon once called Sharkey the best fighter in the world from the neck down, and it is a good description.

Sharkey was essentially good at everything, with his only major weakness being an unstable mindset.

If he had been born with the temperament of a Max Schmeling, then history might have been very different.

 

I would plead the case for Hart being a bit higher.

 

Terrible order. Horrible list.

 

Tyson is top 10 all time with ease.

 

I would put Tyson above Patterson, yeah.
Patterson has the same quality of wins but Tyson was like a more robust, more consistently vicious version.

I don't think Leon Spinks was the worst. He beat Ali over 15 fast rounds. He looked good in there.

 

This one is closer to mine, some disagreements:

- I'd have Corbett ahead of Braddock, though it's close,
- I'd have Fitzsimmons ahead of Baer and Sharkey, close to Walcott,
- I'd have Bowe below Schmeling, Johnson and Jeffries,
- I'd have Schmeling inside top 15, but I'm biased
- I'd probably put Wladimir and Frazier ahead of Evander, but it's really tough.

Again, very solid list.
