There was 4 TV channels then
Only Sports fans watch AJ lol, Mark put a red nose on you nincompoop
Anyone willing to buy a PPV for a boxing show is a sports fan by default. I doubt there’s many people who have no interest in any sport whatsoever but are paying £25 for a PPV when AJ fights.
That`s the point I`m trying to make, I don`t think AJ is that huge a star despite getting a lot of press attention.
Well id say sponsors might just argue that
Fair enough still don`t think he`ll ever be a megastar.
I'm hardly his biggest fan but id say he already is
Whats you definition of megastar in boxing?
Bruno in the 80`s and 90`s, Benn v Eubank 2 drawing 15 million viewers, Benn v McClellan drawing 17 million viewers.
Again, thats massively down to how much viewing habbits have changed over the years
Im Benns biggest fan but dont even try tell me he was a megastar
AJ is a megastar without doubt. He wouldn’t be able to walk down any street/ go for a pint in any pub in the country without being absolutely mobbed.
Benn was wildly popular in Britain, his fight with Watson was iconic, the problem was that he lost that fight which set his career back, he then went to America and stopped Dewitt and Barkley, both fights were on ITV, his first fight with Eubank started their iconic feud, however he lost that too, the McClellan fight sent Benn`s popularity threw the roof.
He wasn't a megastar however
And it was a draw
Kinda feel like he already is, he sells out Wembley against his mandatories, no one else is capable of that. He consistently does 1 million or thereabouts on ppv, heads marketing campaigns with Lucozade, Lynx, Under Armour and Beats, how his own Hugo Boss clothing range, he had the Saudis paying hundreds of millions to secure his fight, he appears on prime time talk shows, I'd say he is every bit the mega star. Not sure how badly that's been damaged with his recent loss but his brand is huge!
Frank Bruno. Unchallenged since the 80s.
I remember being in a bar in Magaluf listening to the Benn-McClellan fight on radio because there was no easy way to get it on TV. The place was absolutely mobbed and the atmosphere the best I’ve experienced with boxing by a distance.
That’s casual fan drawing power.
