It would be worse than that...it would negatively affect his reputation. Guy's shot like few other active fighters are.
Radio 5 had Marvin Hagler and Richie Woodhall on last night and Hagler kept saying that Joe should fight "Antonio Tarvers" (sic) and then retire. The only reasons Joe could have had for fighting Tarver are: 1) He beat RJJ (but Joe's done this too now). 2) He's American. Other than that it's a nothing fight and given what a one sided beating that Hopkins gave Tarver and how shot to bits Tarver is, I would agree that it would negatively affect Joe's reputation.
I think it would affect his reputation, and he probably knows that. In his book, whilst stating that Roy was shot, he also pointed out that Tarver was never really that good anyway - as he was schooled by Hopkins. Whom Joe subsequently beat in a close fight. I could maybe understand it if Tarver brought plenty of $$$ to the table - but as he doesn't, Joe ought to be looking elsewhere if he decides to continue. He really would be a fraud if he fought Tarver next! I could think of 8/10 fighters more deserving of a shot than that slapheaded, loudmouthed dickhead. Such as....... Hopkins rematch Kessler rematch Froch Dawson Bute Johnson Abraham Bika rematch atsch Cunningham catchweight atsch
the marving hagler comment was the reason i started the thread, i read it on bbc website:good yes i also thought the comment was strange?
It's weird because Hagler has lived in Europe for years and prides himself on knowing about current fighters but that comment made him seem very out of the loop. Pougatch (however you spell it) and Woodhall didn't pick him up on it because he's Marvin Hagler but they also didn't repeat it because they didn't want to draw attention to the crap he was talking. He was on there to plug his new aftershave.
I heard the interview on the radio last night, and I heard Hagler say someone, and it sounded like Tarver but I just thought I'd miss heard it. So Hagler suggested Tarver, and Woodhall suggested a "Peter Manfredo type character". Before he fought Dawson, Tarver looked a more real fight then Jones, with him coming off the back of his win over Woods. After the one sided affair with Dawson it's clear to see that Tarver has had his chips now, and a win over him in his current state would add nothing, imo.
