He has plenty of elusive, sneaky assed tricks for sure. He's teach you how to use your headbutt... feign low blows, commit armed robbery although not if your white that's for sure.Let him see your green then walk away with it! great trainer for sure
He defo has the knowledge & can motivate a fighter. But there are other intangibles that make a good trainer besides know how... I'd like to put Jones Jr. in this catagory as well. Another fighter who would defo make a great coach/trainer based on his ability to read fighter's and find their weakness. (As an analyst on HBO he was almost always 100% spot on)
I think I know what you are getting at, but Pac is not a good example. He parties a lot. Hopkins just doesn't. He's not normal. He's not a normal man. He's different. The only guy who is comparable currently is Glen Johnson. Which just goes to show how rare it is to find the Hopkins mentality and talent in one package.
I have thought for awhile that Bernard should be a trainer when he retires. It would hard if impossible to find an active fighter who knows more, or works harder than B-hop. He sees things a lot of other people just don't see.
I agree that hop would make a very good trainer he has maintained as a boxer due to his understanding of tactics and strategy and that would make him a good trainer
Consider Pavlik's workrate, power, stamina, durability, courage, and fundamentals: Now factor in BHop's boxing brain, and you've got one scary fighter.
Considering his amazing tactical knowledge, boxing brain and vast amounts of insight into boxing history and uncanny way of spotting any weakness, exploiting it and taking his opponent's best weapon away from them.... you would have to think he has the potential to be an amazing trainer. That said i am not sure how high his demands would be on his student.... there are not many people that are mentally nor physically capable of the work ethic and dedication that Bernard demands of himself. The level he fights at still at his age is simply insane, but if he would find a fighter that he has a connection or chemistry with i think he could do wonders for that person. All speculation though, the guy has a strong personality and ego ... but outside of pre fight trash talk he seems like a good guy so ill give him the benefit of the doubt.
Pretty much my choice, if I'd like to see one active fighter turning into a trainer. His boxing knowledge is up there with the best trainers and experts out there, he knows all styles, trained for all styles, analized all styles. He always was a student of the game and can see things very few can. Since boxing is all he knows, he's been in the gym every single day for more than 3 decades and sees himself as an iconic black figure of his generation who would like to inspire as many young ones as he can, when his active boxing career is over, he should be a trainer. He could use his creative energies and knowledge in a different way, but still in the gym, still making some excercises, still reviewing tapes etc. Hell... the way he fights these days he could be a great sparring partner as well for another 20 years.
