Would bringing back 15 round fights really make boxing more exciting?

It seems that most people just assume that 15 round fights are better than 12 round fights by nature. To me, this has never been a foregone conclusion. Let me spell it out:

    Reasons Why Fights Are Boring:

    - Excessive clinching
    - Running
    - Low punch output / lack of aggression

How would a 15 round fight eliminate any of these? :huh If the fight lasts longer, out of shape boxers are going to clinch more, and the punch output will be even lower because they need to stretch their energy out over a longer period of time.

The only one you can make a case for is running - it's harder to run for 15 rounds than for 12. I don't buy this though. "Running" is a deeply ingrained style for those who use it. Do you honestly think 3 extra rounds would make someone like Floyd circle his opponent any less?

    ---------------

So, I think it wouldn't make boring fights any better. But, it may help some exciting fights become even more exciting. However, this is only true for a very select few fights in which both fighters have great stamina and great desire. For example, Calzaghe - Kessler probably would be better as a 15 rounder.

15 rounds gives the best chance for dramatic finishes and a dramatic come back.

Yes, it would make boxing more exciting. The championship rounds (11-15) were something very special in championship bouts. Something has been lost for sure with the 12 round bouts. Of course, the change was made for safety reasons. Not sure if the statistics (if there are any) support the change or not.

true but remember if this did happen then that makes a pressure to have a better stamina. with 12 rounds you can get away with low stamina with 15 you cant or if you dont you will lose the fight.

15 rounds adds more drama. More dimensions to a fight. Fighters must be more strategic.

15 rounds requires fighters to be in better shape.

The real championship rounds (13, 14, 15) required fighters to dig deep and demonstrate their mental strength.

Not every fight need go 15 just the Championship fights. Any bout for the Championship should be 15. The tendency to slap to a lead and run would get a little more difficult. 15 would benefit the punchers a little more while 12 favors speed.

Exactly. There are quite a few fights that 12 round fights that ended on disputed verdicts which would have been decided if they still had the championship rounds.

The misguided decision to shorten fights to 12 rounds - largely at the behest of TV networks - is one of the WORST, if not THE worst, changes that has happened since I started following boxing!

Bring BACK the Championship Rounds!!! :nod
