If Buster had being around, for Any of the best Swarming type heavyweight s thru history, would he have been a total btch to fight? At his best of course.
I'd say so yes, a big fighter that knew how to use his physical advantages. When you have a great jab as a baseline it is very difficult to get past it when you're giving away a massive reach advantage, if you do get past it you risk the wrath of a hard uppercut. He was a very fluent boxer with every combination in the book.
He certainly had a good tool box. He proved that against Tyson of course. The swarming guys are gonna struggle against his Jab, that s for definite.
Yea he would. Whoever beats him would have to take some leather on the way in. They would have to get the fight into the phone booth but even on that day Buster was mean himself. Buster was taking no shi! Rough tactics, infighting might not be effective if he had the mentality he did in Toyko.
I don't know if he'd beat "every" swarmer, but on that night Douglas would have been a serious challenge for every swarmer no doubt. A heavy yet snappy jab to keep his opponent at bay while also setting up his punches, a good right straight, a powerful uppercut, good lateral movement, responsible defense, strong combinations, he had a whole bunch of tools that would give a swarmer nightmares.
Problem with Buster is you have to match him in these type fights based on only one fight. Frazier I think wears him out and stops him.
Any big heavy with a big punch and a great jaw would be a handful for the division's swarmers on their very best night. Oliver McCall would be bad for swarmers. There are dozens and dozens of examples. Of course, it was only on perhaps three occasions that Douglas was at his best. He was easily discouraged, hard to train and a terrible B-side who "lost every fight that Don King expected him to lose" until Tyson. So, yeah, if Buster's mother dies the month of his fight with the likes of Frazier and Tyson he will be nightmarish. Nine times out of every other ten they beat the crap out of him because if you show weakness or lethargy against someone like Joe Frazier you he punches you very very often until you don't feel so good no more.
At his best he could beat any swarmer in HW history - Frazier included (although that'd be a tough task).
The thing is if these ATG swarmers started to get to Douglas, he could fold up like a tent like he did vs Tony Tucker when the going got tough. Against Tyson he had it all his own way apart from one brief moment, and whilst his performances vs Tyson and Mike Williams were both eye catching performances. He was still never really put under any pressure in either fight. Overall I feel like if someone like Frazier started getting to Douglas. You would see Douglas's suspect temperament come into play.
I think he could take quite a bit. And his excellent ability to slip the jab would help him. Very tough fight though
Lol.. Don't feel so good no more. That's one way of putting it, when Frazier s left hook slams on to your jaw!
