I agree with almost everything....... and although ATG status is not really quantifiable and the definition fluctuates, I don't believe him to be one.

I don't think he is an ATG either. He does not have the resume'. However, some of his better fans on here basically bludgeoned me into a grudging respect for the guy.

I have a healthy respect for him. I think he was a great fighter....... awkwardly effective, adaptable, all that. I just think he spent his best years fighting lesser competition than his talents demanded. It's a shame really.

But, I do not consider him a bum, nor do I think all the scathing criticism he gets is warranted.

I think a lot of it is in response to his diehard fans, who, I believe use a bit of revisionist history. Nobody I know was touting Joe as an ATG before he beat Kessler. So, are we supposed to believe that he suddenly was on the strength of beating Kessler, a solid if unremarkable champion, an aged Hopkins and done Jones? He wasnt before, why was he after?

It's a sore subject, but Joe lost any chance to claim me as a fan when he fought Jones instead of Pavlik. Regardless of how that fight might have turned out, it is a fact the Joe spent months calling KP out, and then as soon as he was actually available, Joe made a fight with Jones after calling Jones a shot fighter.

It does seem as Calzaghe was actually his own worst enemy at times. But hey, who isn't?

This is what often happens. When a fighter isnt known to the public, they get taken as insignificant. The super 6 fighters get alot of credit because they have been marketed well, so the public know them. Take A Dirrell, hes being praised for losing to Froch and beating a small former MW champ in Abraham, but who are the big names on AAs resume? Yet AA and Dirrell are respected because they are recognised.
If you look at the win resume of alot of fighters who are highly rated in America its not as good as Calzaghes resume ie
    P Williams
    K Pavlik
    A Ward
    A Dirrell
    T Bradley
    S Cunningham
    C Dawson
    A Berto
    Y Gamboa
You may say well they're not HOFs but
Hopkins resume has been a debateable arguement before as to whether its better and Moselys win resume could be arguably worse than Calzaghes, because if you break it down he has a fantastic win over De La Hoya, but then its P Holiday, Margarito, then a shot Margarito & Vargas.
Im sure this will get alot of backlash, and its not meant as an insult in any way as all the fighters mentioned have done something credible in their careers and are good fighters, who could have points argued for and against them, but what im saying is because they are recogonised, they and the people they have beaten get given credit. If you look at some of the unknown names (outside of Europe) on Calzaghes record like Veit. Veit has a win over current WBO LHW champ Braehmer & Brewer, on his record and out of all the losses Veit has had they have only been to world or future world champs. Mkertchyan when Calzaghe beat him had only lost to a future world champ and after Calzaghe beat him he went on to beat undefeated European champ 26-0 Chanet who had beaten undefeated Tsypko who gave undefeated Lacy problems before their bout was ruled a ND and looked unlucky against Lacy after Calzaghe beat him, but because they are unknown fighters to the American public they are not viewed as credible, yet for Calzaghes win over Bika he is given credit, Bika who lost by MD to S Soliman. This is because Bika is known to the American public for winning the contender series against non elite fighters.
Type what you will, but im sure at least someone will understand what im saying about fighters being given more credit if they are recognised
