Would Calzaghe have destroyed Nigel Benn just like he did Eubanks if they fought?

I was just making the point that he had had a very good number of pro fights under his belt, and had had an extensive amature experience also.

 

calzaghe had a accromoniuos managment change before he became champ which slowed his progress, he also had a lot of fights cancelled for hand injurys before he became champ, so it was a stop /start beggining to his career.

and really the rest of his career has been the same, because of hand injurys, it has meant he has not fought as much as he should have.

a good start with eubank should hav been built on .

 

benn,eubank and collins v calzaghe would have been good fights.shame calz was just outside that era,but i honestly believe calz would have came out on top.close though.

Funny thing is although I am a Calzaghe fan from dot I still dont see him in the same league as Eubank and Benn. Those guys for me had something in them that Joe hasnt got - not sure whether it was the era, the brutality (Watson, McLellan), rivalries or personality flaws but they both had something extra special.

Prime I pick them both somehow over Joe, in emotionally charged wars.

Calzaghe beats Benn all day long, too much speed & skill

Calzaghe hits hard enough to hurt Benn and he keeps Benn honest with his speed and southpaw style.

But Benn wont go down without a fight.

 

Would Calzaghe have destroyed Nigel Benn just like he did Eubanks if they fought? Calzaghe would have beat a shot Nigel Benn in the same way he beat Eubanks. If your talking prime for prime then that is a different matter.

 

I've seen the clip where Benn admits himself that this would have happened. Nuff said.

 

I think Benn wins this. JoCal may have the better boxing skills but I believe that as soon as Benn lands a few power shots its game over.

JoCal has been put on his arse before only this time he'd stay down. In the fight with Byron Mitchell how did he respond to that knock down. He got up and started banging with Mitchell, you do that with Benn your playing his game and you lose.

 

Interesting point, I don't think he would have played it this way though. I reckon it would have been more like the Kessler fight where he felt the powr and then relied on his skills to coast to a wide UD.

 

on the other hand he could taste benn's power and react how he did when kessler started landing big uppercuts on him by boxing him silly from the outside and peppering him with the southpaw jab.

 

i would back calzaghe to win by late stoppage just because his chin was so good but i would never write a prime benn off against anyone.

 

I can see your point, but generally apart from Lacy JoCal has the tendency to fight to the level of his opposition. I just think when you look back at Joe's career there's some fights there he should have won easy but he brawled and made the fight tougher then he needed to. I think at some point in the fight he choses to brawl and Benn clocks him. One things for sure would be a lotta fun to watch.

 

Benn may well have decked him but no way does he knock him out, nobody ever came close.
