Would Calzaghe have entered the super 6??

so far. its incredible what hes achieving - but the end is nigh and there's no doubt about that.

 

I would definately say that he wouldn't of wanted to, but would he have a choice? He would be of been hated had a Super Six competition with the top 168 fighters happened and he didn't join it, or even more so if he prevented a tournament from happening at all.

 

true. and i agree there's no way calzaghe would have joined it.

the flip side of that is that he was the man and the reason it's happening now is because there is no clear successor.

kessler seemed to be but then mogens palle brought him back against sartisan and haussler which was a joke and a vote of no confidence after losing to calzaghe.

pre-calzaghe kessler fought MUCH BETTER SMW contenders than calzaghe did, and even though kessler got great exposure and rep from the calzaghe fight all that got pissed down the toilet once palle kept him safe on the euro scene.

While it's time depending on whether Calzaghe would have entered - it's virtually 100% clear they'd be fighting for a chance to fight Calzaghe.

just be big enough to say what you disagree with and why rather than taking a defensive stance (no pun intented).

I think you're misjuding me - normally I'd be a lot more blunt, and condascending while explaining in clear terms why a good 80% of the posters in this thread are (in my opinion ;-) ) utter numpties.

Last time I did, after I explained (clearly) why Joe vs Toney wasn't EVER viable - I got no response at all - left me disheartened.

but what about joe and hopkins or jones in their prime?

you only get to fight the best fighters of your era by making waves.

 

Jones - neither were interested. Both will say that - they weren't on each others radar, and had no interest in the other.
Hopkins - had a chance in 02, accepted, then decided that he wanted double what he agreed to. Hardly Joes fault.

(yeah I do mean cal/toney).

Only real fighter that can lay any claim to Joe dodging a fight he could have had is Michelzewski - as WBO super champ, he could have claimed a mandatory shot at DM's crown - but again, didn't appear to be on each others radar.

 

bt you understand that in the business side of boxing which dominates modern day boxing, that a fighter who never tries to crack PPV or US networks is never going to get defining fights?

calzaghe was, admittedly, a high risk low reward fight and its up to him to earn that. and how hard would it have been for him considering the challengers at MW and LHW?

if ricky hatton can get a crack at the two best fighters of the last 10 years by fighting stiffer opposition even though hes not as skilled as joe then joe has no excuse.

and the truth is he doesnt.

 

look without the tournament he picked all 4 belts IBF from lacey and WBA,WBC from kessler to add to his WBO he did this without a tournament so why not give him credit?
lets say it happened in 2004/2005 we would have kessler and lacey as the big names and he slapped the **** out of both already who would beat him...?

 

clearly calzaghe was the man at SMW - the million dollar question that gives him so much stick is why he didnt test himself against the best fighters of his era when it mattered because they were both within his reach.

no-one will question calzaghe's ability at SMW, only his ability to not find out how good he could have been.

He was undoubtedly top-notch at the level he operated, but why didn't he go that extra step? Why didn't he test himself against elite guys in & around his weight class?

 

Joe couldn't have got down to 160 - that much is clear. It's unreasonable to think he could - he was always a solid to big smw.

Hopkins was offered, he agreed - then he changed his mind - for whatever reason.
Jones - neither were interested.

Lets be honest - Joe's only other route that would have led to success was really going to LHW - fighting DM (maybe) to be WBO champ - and forcing the Jones fight that way, if it didn't happen for whatever reason - he had to work up to be mandatory.

Only then if he wins - is any of that successful, and timing wise - it never really works out that well for him to move up. Joe wasn't mentally a strong enough fighter until after Lacy, but physically - he'd have had the tools around the Brewer fight.

In the (in most minds) likelihood that Joe loses to Jones - no shame, even if it's close. He's in no mans land. Jones either has all the titles, or Joe has no direct route to DM as he will have given up the WBO at 168. Maybe he gets another chance to win titles, but he's lost all of his position - brings nothing other than an awkward style, and a hard nights work for people.

Joes only real shot earlier was the Bhop fight - that fell through, what followed was the best that would/could have happened for Joe all things considered.
