This content is protected I remember him absolutely destroying Eddie Greg. Greg is a fringe contender but Cooneys inside game looked leveled up when he fought an aggressive fighter of a similar height
There were some big men that I’m sure he could have beaten. Especially considering that he might have been more mobile than a lot of them. While Eddie Gregg was a big man with a decent record the guy had no chin though.
Cooney looks like a #1 contender here. That left uppercut was vicious. I hate to sound like that guy but do any current heavyweights even bring it like that anymore? Obviously Cooney had limitations and this was against Eddie Gregg but it’s still impressive. I see he was listed at 6’7, was he really that tall?
You always have to take bouts like this--when a prominent fighter takes on a former sparring partner. They get the win and look good but it is kind of a result almost needing an asterisk.
Theres superheavys who do better against other superheavys then smaller HWs because they are better boxers compared to the superheavys than the small guys. Some superheavyweights are relying on their physical advantages to win fights and these guys can take advantage of that. During Cooneys career he was probably the tallest top HW by a decent margin so its really hard to say.Gregg was a fairly decent HW but hes the sort of guy Cooney is supposed to beat. Cooney was more of a power guy and with power guys all things being equal the bigger target is harder to knockout.
Against guys similar size to himself, and I can see why he would, he had a great punch selection and set up punches through gaps well, and the gaps are there against bigger opponents
Cooney was a better fighter than given credit for. His biggest issue was he carried the weight of the majority of American's on his shoulders, when they turned on him because of the Holmes loss, he wasn't able to cope with it, fell into alcohol, drugs, and complacency . Loss all confidence in self.
Yes it is rather surprising that he didn't do better after that, but the reality is that he lost the big ones.
