I think he would. He would have lost to Roy Jones, but that wasn't during Hopkins reign as champ. I don't see a single opponent there who would cause him trouble.
I think Echols could give him some trouble. Dude hit like a mule kicks! Maybe not win, but certainly make things interesting. If Pirog could take him out, it's certainly not out of the question. Wouldn't count out Tito or Jermain Taylor either. Taylor's jab was one of the best. Kept Hopkins honest for the most part. Same w/ Joppy, who's a bit underrated. Sure Jacobs wins most, but to think no one causes him trouble!?! Question is, would Jacobs be coming in the ring near 180?
Hypothetically he could possibly beat everyone, though I don't think he would of been as impressive in some of the wins. But the big difference would be consistency and longevity. It's not just who Hopkins beat it's how long he did it for. Hopkins was champion for a decade with 20 title defences. Jacobs won the title at 27, he'd need to remain undefeated until 37 when most fighters have faded, no chance he remains champion until he's 40 like BHop, very few are capable of that. So while I could see him beating all of the middleweight Hopkins fought I don't see him being able to replicate that run. Either he'd get complacent after being dominant for so long and lose to a worse fighter or he'd simply get old and loses.
Pirog took him out because he's technically excellent and he threw a flawless punch off a perfect setup. It's my favourite KO ever just because of the lovely shifting footwork leading up to it. Note my profile picture.
That's a fair point. While I'm not a Hopkins fan, I have to admit he did age beautifully and managed to be consistent through a long, long period. I think there are very few fighters that could replicate what he did over the same span of time.
Hopkins was like 168 on fight night, even if that. There is a reason why he managed to make 156lbs for the De La Hoya fight at 39 years of age.
I think Jacobs is too chinny. Even though I consider Trinidad a blown up welter at 160, he had massive power and very skilled. I think he'd repeat the same demolition job on Jacobs as Pirog did. I think Echols was also a big strong middle weight who was able to put Hopkins down in a close encounter their first fight; I'd see him giving Jacobs trouble and maybe finishing the job.
False. Hopkins was no where near Jacobs in ring weights at 160. Hopkins often entered the ring well under the middleweight limit.
I think the fatal flaw in these type of questions is that it doesn't really take into account times forward march. At his absolute peak Jacobs has a good shot but that doesn't take into account him declining with age or whether Jacobs could even make middleweight over the length of the reign. I'd expect him to pick up a loss or two.
