Depends on what we consider being an average night. Are we talking prime for prime, or Holmes at virtually any point during his reign? If the latter coincides with the question, then Gerry might have a chance of beating the Holmes who fought Carl Williams..

    Probably, given those circumstances.

Holmes went on a steep decline after 83. He looked a bit sluggish and relatively easy to hit against Smith and it only got worse from that point on. I think ****ey would have a shot against 85 Holmes.

My intention was more the former. Holmes in his prime but an average night for him.

I don't think Larry had an average night in his prime

    Prime for Prime?

    No.

Holmes could pretty much see all of Gerry's punches coming.

His right hand wasn't good enough for him to land a lucky one and really hurt Holmes.

Hard to say, I suppose, but I think if ****ey would've come out for blood and tried to savage Holmes, I think he would've kayoed a prime Holmes more often than not. ****ey put cuffs on himself that night and still was competitive trying to score points. He attacks with intensity, I can see Holmes getting folded up with a bodyshot or going Norton due to a left hook. ****ey is way underrated as far as ability goes because he was so self-defeating.

No he couldn't, not during their primes. The version Spinks beat he might have a chance. I just don't think C00ney would quite have the polish to finish Holmes if he caught him. Even when old Holmes was hard to stop.

Gerry just didn't have the speed or punch resistance, the left hook was no kind of bread and butter weapon for using on Larry, and Holmes quickly discovered Gerry couldn't take a shot to the temple. Not a good rematch, Larry would have had confidence going in, Gerry wouldn't know if he had any chance.

****ey's best night never happened. His best night would have materialized if he had been exposed to better opposition along the way, lived a more disciplined lifestyle, and learned how to use his right more effectively. If those factors had been in place, then maybe he would have had a chance against Holmes. Boxing a boxer, though, was unwise, and a more aggressive fight plan would be needed. Gerry's ability to take a punch would always be something to worry about.
