When ever they would have fought?

So my meaning is, even if Rocky had come out of retirement 2 - 3 years later, do you think Floyd's chin would have eventually succumbed to Marciano s power?
Or would the older, slower Rock have found himself instead getting battered?

I think he'd beat Marciano if he was coming out of retirement. Prime Marciano stops him.

Prime for prime, Marciano wears him down for a late TKO.

Marciano coming out of retirement doesn't fair very well. Probably succumbs to a midround TKO.

Rocky always has a puncher's chance with someone this size, even coming out of retirement. But his slower reflexes and bad back after being inactive would mean that Floyd should be favored. Logically Floyd should win, but anything could happen. Rocky probably can't finish him with just one big hit, it really depends on how Floyd reacts to the first serious punch that lands and if Rocky can follow up before the bell rings. If Floyd survived the round, he may make adjustments and take full advantage of his blinding speed to frustrate Rocky.

Floyd would win at that point, maybe by late stoppage. I think Rocks style of fighting only works if he can go 100% for the entire fight and that includes the intense training required to pull that off. What I'm saying is his style wouldn't age well and I don't think there are adjustments he can make as an older fighter and still be effective. He chose the right time to retire.

Rocky Marciano wins this fight if it is prime for prime. But consider this, Cus D Amato coddled his fighters much in the same manner in which a parent smothers a child, a teenager. Cus did not allow his fighters venture into the world of boxing or venture into the world. Floyd Patterson like Mike Tyson was protected, much more Patterson. Cus allowed Patterson to fight school teachers like Roy Harris, Tom Mc Neely, an unproven pro like Pete Rademacher, a Tommy Hurricane Jackson. But when Floyd was given the okay by his mentor to fight Ingemar Johansson on June 25 1959, both found out how good Ingo was. To his credit, Patterson regained the title on June 20 1960, and defeated Ingo again in 1961. But there was hesitation when it came to fighting no.1 challenger Sonny Liston in the Fall of 1962, Even President Kennedy invited Floyd to the White House to inquire about his potential fight against Liston. Floyd was a classy man, a true professional, but if Cus D Amato had allowed a fight with prime Marciano, things could have gotten ugly once Rocky's Suzi Q connected with Patterson's chin. Rocky for lack of size was very tenacious, he usually walked through punches, looking to disable his opponent with his strength. A good battle until round 6 when Floyd realizes that he could not hurt Rocky but bloody his eyebrows, Marciano ends it in round 6.

    Hi Buddy.
Interesting post, not least because from what I have read ( on a couple of occasions ) the Rock did indeed contemplate returning to the ring, not long after his retirement, but cited to his inner circle, that Patterson would be too quick and fast for him to have a reasonable chance of pulling off a victory.
    stay safe amigo.

Actually Mike in 1959 after Ingo won the title. Rocky started to train , then decided not to come back, his family was against a comeback.

Floyd stayed at MW until Marciano retired, then knocked out Moore for his vacated title in what Archie called the worst performance of his long and illustrious career. Rocky considered a comeback because Patterson was hittable anywhere on his body, not having the mobility to avoid having his arms, shoulders and kidneys as targets. In Rocky Marciano's Book on Boxing and Bodybuilding is a chapter titled How I Would Whip Patterson, so he certainly was thinking about it. Then, Ingo took care of any notions of a comeback, having proved Rocky's point.

So if the fight had taken place in 1958, I wouldn't have predicted what would have happened, Rocky Marciano had a period of inactivity of 2 and a half years. Inactivity at that age implies a significant decline in athleticism. But if The Brockton Blockbuster continued his career until 1958, and after the fight with Floyd Patterson retired, that's another story. Rocky Marciano and his fighting style are a nightmare for any 190-lbs boxer. Patterson would break under the pressure, and with Rocky Marciano getting older, MAYBE he wouldn't lose by KO, but by UD.

But in many of Floyd Patterson's title defenses, he hit the canvas against guys like Pete Rademacher, Roy Harris, Tom McNeely, and Ingo. Imagine a Rocky Marciano Suzi-Q landing flush on Patterson's jaw, it would be the beginning of the end for Patterson as Marciano was relentless when he had his opponent hurt, like a shark smelling blood.
