I'm wondering if a move down to 145 would make Frankie a better fighter. Sure, he'd lose the big speed advantage he enjoys over most guys at 155, but would an increase in power compensate for this? Frankie competed well with Ben Henderson in terms of volume, but Bendo was a clear winner because he was very clearly hurting and damaging Frankie, while Frankie was not remotely hurting Ben at all. The thing is, Frankie obviously does possess some pop in his punches, because he managed to TKO Gray Maynard, and Maynard is a big, strong lw with a decent chin. If Frankie dropped to 145, would his punches carry more weight and venom, and so make him a much more effective striker? Or would 10lbs not make much of a difference, would he still rely on volume and movement down there? :bbb
i don't think that it's his size, it's just that he doesn't commit unless he has your back or you are running on fumes...i can't see dropping down changing that
No it's not his size that makes him feather fisted it's his technique he's in and out like an amateur boxer but it's what he needs to do because he's in a division of monsters (compared to Frankie), if he planted his feet more for power he'd leave himself open to more counters and TD'
He rocked Maynard because he hit him on the button. The power comes in when you miss the mark on someone and you are still able to rock them. He doesn't have that type of power. He will be able to utilize his strength and power more at 145 than at LW, of course, because he won't always be the smaller guy. But he is also going to have to change his style, because his herkey jerkey movement will be less effective against the quicker guys.
not only did he hit him on the button but it was an uppercut when maynard was getting back to his feet, maynard didnt have a clue what just hit him, he never saw a thing, you can see the punch itself had absolutely nothing on it, a lucky punch one could say
145lbers cut as well, he'd probably still be small...and an accumulative puncher, as he displayed against Maynard in the 3rd fight.
No maybe he has more power when he´s fighting smaller guys but if he was a true puncher he would still have power at LW. His (lack of) power won´t change just because he´s changing the weight class.
As others have said, because of his style he probably won't automatically start knocking guys out. But at 145, when he takes guys down he'll be able to do a lot more with them. He actually has really good takedowns and sets them up beautifully, but guys just get right back up. Won't happen as much at 145.
Exactly, he still won't be the "bigger fighter" when/if he drops down, most guys his size can cut down to 135 if they choose. Frankie is a punches in bunches guy he doesn't throw many haymakers so I wouldn't expect much difference if he drops a division.
Ahhhh good ole chincheckers, there must be a signup sheet because there has been a flood of chin experts in the forums lately. Their expertise is second to none and we all should applaud their contribution.:good
