Would Frazier Bring Down Iron Chinned Vitali?

How many fights did Frazier have at that point in his career?

Vitali was taken the distance by a 40 year old Briggs. Lewis demolished a much better version of Briggs 12 years prior.

Also Frazier would've knocked Bugner out but chose to have mercy on him. He had a clean shot for a left hook after he initially dropped him and chose not to hit him.

Furthermore, the same Bugner also took Muhammad Ali the distance.

I wouldn't bring up former middleweights and Frazier and Vitali's respective track records with them if I were you.

Also Ellis did not give Frazier "a good go for a few rounds". He won the first round (that's it), which was common against the slow starting Frazier, then got dominated, then dispatched inside the first 4 rounds, being finished brutally. I really don't know how you can knock Frazier's performance here. Nobody had ever beaten Ellis so decisively (including Ali) with the exception of Shavers who beat a washed Ellis but even so was stunned and being pummeled in the corner before getting lucky.

Furthermore that's not a good argument at all even if it was true (it isn't). Louis was dropped by an aging, arthritic, former light heavyweight who hadn't fought in over 2 years. Should that be used against him?

OK is this supposed to be a knock against Frazier? We know that Foreman went on clear the division and become a commonplace top 5 heavyweight. So what if he didn't establish himself much before that (if he didn't). It's not like anyone's saying "Liston got stopped by Ali who'd just been dropped by Cooper, and given hell by Jones lol what a bum"

The reason much emphasis is placed on Vitali's loss to Byrd in this thread is because their is a clear bias in this thread from certain posters who bring up deliberately misleading facts while ignoring valid criticisms that don't suit their narrative.

 

That's not what you said, you said Frazier lost TWICE to Ali by way of stoppage. Please provide proof of that statement or admit you're wrong if you can't.

 

Thanks for post this considering the 1981 version of Joe Frazier is the only one Vitali would have stood a chance with.

Frazier and Vitali had much different styles. Someone with Frazier's style could only fight for so long because it was physically demanding and took it's toll on the body which is why he burned out much quicker than Vitali. Vitali may have been 39 years old but SO WAS BRIGGS who'd been fighting for far longer than Klitschko was at that point, and had also been in wars whereas Frazier was fighting someone 6 years his junior. Not exactly the same thing.

 

Ali was one of the best fighters when it came to strength applicable to the ring. When Ali had his arms on you, he made you stop what you were doing. Look at him manhandle Foreman in the clinches at will, who was far stronger than Vitali. Please make me laugh by saying otherwise.

 

Didn’t man handle Frazier, also how do you know foreman is stronger than vitali, you literally have no way to back that up

Apart from the Byrd fight I think Vitali usually showed more heart than Joe Bugner, or more determination.
And he was a bit bigger and probably a little bit stronger.
But he was more or less the same category and class of fighter.

I've never rated Bugner but I have no idea what Vitali did to convince some of you he was a much higher level than that.

And there's nothing in Vitali's style that would make him favourite against Joe Frazier.

 

Frazier excelled against fighters whose strength was fighting off the back foot.

Whether Vitali wants to come forward or go back, Frazier wears him down.

 

Actually, watching prime Bugner it is clear he is a better boxer than Vitali.
