If that tragic fight never happen with him and Nigel Benn in 1995 could you see him being an all time great? Also I know Jones never wanted to fight him, but do you think they could have worked it out? To me G-Man was showing me traits that he could have been a top star in Boxing in the 90's. We all know when Benn was knocked out the ring the fight should've been stopped. So, anyway what's your opinion on this? Last thread for the week I just really wanted to ask this.

Back then there weren't to many people on Roy's level. As much as I liked G Man he would have been very outclassed.

I agree. If you cant get through nigel benn how in the world do you think he wouldve handled rjjr? roy jones especially at middleweight was just scary and inhumanly fast. i know this is a bit crazy but i think prime roy beats sugar ray robinson at 160. robinson had an iron beard but he wasnt the hardest guy to hit and with floyds speed and power it wouldve been brutal for both fighters but i think ultimately it gets stopped and roy wins.

Thats funny, considering G-man beat him in the amateurs.

And we all know Roy was packing a glass jaw, whereas G-man was packing the toolset to expose that glass jaw.

Did you just assume Gman just walked through Jones ? Because from all accounts G didn't come out like he dominated him ..

My two cents: it was only a matter of time before McClellan was undone, even if he'd gotten past Benn.

His chin was too good for his own good: he was taking shots from Tommy Hearns as a teenager, was in numerous gym wars, and even in Jackson I, he showed plenty of faith in it (that Jackson could get McClellan to back up is a testament to the nuclear power he had. That McClellan wasn't flat on his back is a testament to his ability to take a punch from a boxing perspective, if not a life health one). However, I don't think it's a coincidence that the more punishment Gerald absorbed, the more erratic and violent his behavior out of the ring became. The headaches and blinking from the Jackson fight was a telltale sign that his brain had already reached a dangerous spot.

By the time the Benn fight happened, he was a man possessed- convinced that he was going to kill Benn, feeding puppies to his fighting dogs, running over flamingos....it was a path of destruction that really could've only ended one way.

I think his personal life could've changed. Anyway I think when his mouthpiece didn't stay in the fight should have been stopped.

sure man, roy jones went 16 years and 48 fights with never being knocked out. so your theory obviously everyone packs "glass jaws" until they get knocked out. :rofl:patsch

i guess mayweather is "packing a glass jaw" too since he has been a pro now for about that length and 45 fights

Beast of a fighter, literally, but a prime Rjj would of known of GM's power beforehand and try to use it against him. Counter all night while keeping his distance. Rjj still had a lot of power that easily matched Benn's if not more. At 175 Rjj was crackin ribs. GM was very good, but can't see him beating a Toney much less prime Rjj.

Just as great physically, but without Jones' brains. Jones new how to use what he had better when he had it.
