If you watch Cooney's fight with Holmes and previous fights you will see a guy who has tremendous power, very good jab and hooks, knows how to fight tall, and can be very aggresive. He fought a competetive fight with Holmes despite not commiting to his usual aggressive early assault and showed a lot of heart. I was at the Wlad vs Igragimov fight (if you can call it that) and am convinced Cooney would walk through the very tentative Wladimir. Im not trying to come off as a negative or bitter fan, I just truly believe Cooney beats Wlad, Peter, Sultan, etc.
In terms of one punch power Cooney's left hook was more powerful than Wlad's straight right hand. You could argue his loss to Holmes was better than any of Wlad's wins simply based on the calibre of Holmes.
Wlad vs. Cooney would be a real money maker. I do not think that Cooney would win, but it would be exciting enough and many people would be divided before the fight. Cooney would be a belt holder today for sure.
Vlad would have knocked Cooney out. Easily. Vlad is the better athlete, he's quicker, he has a better defense, and he is a more versatile boxer. Cooney was easy to hit and he'd be a sitting duck for Vlad's devastating right. I think Vlad could have kept Cooney's left hook at bay. The fact that Cooney would have fought aggressively would make the fight that much easier for Vlad, because Gerry would be wide open. Cooney didn't take a punch very well and his defense was leaky. Gerry could be an awesome fighter against opponents who were stationary targets...flat footed guys who were easy to hit. Against those opponents, Cooney would unload his heavy artillery and destroy his foe. But Vlad isn't that kind of opponent. If Cooney were fighting today, he'd be a top contender. I'm sure of that. But he couldn't beat Vlad, and he would be at risk of losing to a few other top guys as well.
Wladimir is a bit of a better boxer...not to mention he does punch very hard. I think Cooney could beat everyone BUT Wladimir.
No, he sucked. He could not beat Spinks, Holmes, or an old George Foreman. Average contender at best. Maybe he'd get a title belt, maybe not.
I consider myself a Wlad fan, but I dunno a southpaw with tremendous power, not exactly Wlad's cup of tea.
Cooney was pretty good while on the offensive...he deserves credit for that. But anytime someone fought back and had Cooney in trouble, he fell apart fast. Watch the Spinks and Foreman fights: when hurt, Cooney didn't clinch or circle away...he walked face first into his opponents and got knocked out.
I read in Sports Illustrated that a former NFL player now working for a boxing promoter was at the Indy combine scouting for prospects.
