The Times Square card got me thinking about Ryan-Haney recently. Ryan is clearly the much, much better athlete with both the better chin, bigger punch, and faster hands. But Haney is also the more polished boxer overall and when he was disciplined in the middle rounds he gave Ryan a lot of problems. There's a lot of intangibles with both men, with the mental damage Ryan did to Haney, the confidence of both men, and how well each can adapt.
Haney has pretty good fundamentals but I don't think he has what it takes to remain a top fighter especially as he moves up in weight against guys his own size. He doesn't like it when the going gets tough he was in total panic mode against the much smaller Loma and probably would've been stopped if not for his massive size advantage. Once Garcia hit him with a power shot you could see that he was scared he doesn't have a poker face. Garcia knows that Haney is scared of him and he will take advantage of that in a rematch. Garcia could've stopped him last time but I think he got too excited when he hurt Haney once he hurts him in a rematch he just needs to relax and take his time and the knockout will come. Also in the first fight Harvey Dock helped Haney survive.
Ryan beat the heart and balls out of Haney. Not only did Haney send himself to a long hiatus due to the beating he received, but he decided to sue Ryan for battery. Nobody who sues his Boxing opponent for battery is winning a proper match against him afterwards.
Yep it is pretty much saying I know I can't beat you in the ring so I will sue you to get my zero back.
The suing part is one of the weirdest thing happened in boxing, like WTF?? Haney and his dad have no shame, I hope someone punches Bill in the face soon.
Garcia was an absolute mess before his last fight. He came in overweight and his life was in shambles. Despite that, he was able to smack Haney around. If Garcia comes into the bout in good mental and physical shape I don't think Haney has a chance.
Haney made the mistake of going after Ryan... why don't you fight by running, throwing a few punches, and then hugging? I'm sure it would go well for him... it would be a close fight... I think Garcia by not making weight... had a big advantage... I feel like Garcia was dirty with the illegal substances and everything... I think Haney isn't such a crybaby after all... now that I see it from another perspective... I think Haney was stupid to accept the fight under those conditions... I don't know if he would beat him in a rematch, but if he goes out to survive, I'm sure he could do it.
It’s hard to say - Garcia himself very much blows hot and cold, and his out of ring behaviour has been extremely peculiar in recent times. Having said that - Haney has always been used to being the bigger, longer, heavier fighter, usually with a-side advantages to boot. So it was interesting to see how he fell apart when he was in with a guy who he didn’t have a size advantage against (whole other story…), and who was no b-side. He got smacked around and beat up. And somehow it was still close on the cards… too many variables to be certain - but very hard to pick Haney given the thrashing he took last time.
