Barkley had great wins over Thomas Hearns, and a number of other good victories that a lot of people have forgotten such as, James Kinchen, Michael Olajide, Wilford Scypion, and Darrin Van Horn. He also put up game efforts against Roberto Duran, Sumbu Kalambay and Michael Nunn. Barkley's record doesn't look pretty on paper, but that was largely due to the fact that many of his losses came when he was in his late 30's and fighting out of his class at heavyweight. Overrall, I think his power and aggressive style, along with this work ethic would make him a tough foe for a lot of middleweights in many eras, especially any of them who made the mistake of underestimating him.

Too many people simply write him off because of the Nigel Benn Loss, which is an injustice. You can't sum up a man's whole career with a couple of bad performances here and there.
