Ok so I recentley saw that my old gym that I used to go to about 1 and a half years back has switched to thai boxing. I am pretty much only intrested in boxing and that's what I want to compete in but it seems only thai boxing is available, would it be wise to start thaiboxing? would I benefit from training thai boxing? I mainly want to improve my boxing, is that possible with thai boxing? How much do they focus at boxing? Or do they only focus on the very basics of boxing?
You will pick up good punch technique but you'll probably also pick up some habits bad for boxing in my opinion.
Thaiboxing uses a little different styles of defence, offence and footwork to say at least. I dont think that going from Thai to regular would be that hard. Will take some time to get used to.
It wouldn't help with boxing since you can't really bob and weave in muay thai, also the stance is different for kicks and all that however it would be good to keep your fitness up if theres no boxing available.
If you're going to train in Muay Thai you've got to commit 100% to Muay Thai or you're going to be miserable. The discipline has a lot to offer and it's VERY practical in an everyday street fight scenario but it's also extremely physically demanding so , again, if you're going to do it...go all out and don't worry about any ways in which you can improve you're boxing technique. I hate to say it this way but you've got to choose one or the other.
It is true to say that they are very different sports both offensively and defensively but boxing training, punching technique, can be applied in Muay Thai training.
If you just want to compete in a combat sport, then why not. However, it will not help your boxing technique. The front foot is almost never planted because of low rear leg kicks, defense is different, stance is square, etc. Your punching techniques will definitely not improve, but your punching fundamentals will help you. The majority of thai boxers spend minimal time on hands. This is because you get the least amount of money for a ko with punches. I think elbow strikes are next, then knees. You get the majority of the purse from a ko with a kick. I agree with Son of Gaul. You have to commit to one or the other. Good luck.
in muay thai punches are the lowest scoring out of all 8 weapons. I hope this is helpful. If you want to learn how to kick like a machine then sign up boxing and muay thai are complete different sports. Go to a boxing gym if you want to learn to box
Muay Thai is awesome but will teach you a different stance and a completely different approach. You'll be mainly thinking about checking kicks, throwing your own kicks and not do much short work unless you get a collar tie/plum.
muay thai is a brutal sport, shin on shin is ****ing painful or kicking your opponents elbow, is very very painful. muay thai fighters are hard kunts... Love muay thai it is a awesome sport. Also love boxing but are 2 very very different sports.
I did thaiboxing for 3 years after i did taekwondo for 6 years when i was younger and i can say they havent helped me really, at first it was horrible because you just have your hands to work with and are getting ruffed up and all you wanna do is kick on the outside or clinch on the inside but you cant, it was worste for me adapting to boxing on the inside especially when i found myself in those sort of situations where i didnt know what to do next. it still pops in my head to kick now and again in the ring when in certain situations but its just time wasted as you cant kick anyway and i think it can slow decisions down sometimes, bearing in mind i havent even trained in anything besides boxing for a few years now, i really dont think training muay thai and boxing at the same time is a smart idea, not if your serious about boxing.
