He probably wouldn't...It goes beyond an amazing jaw...McCall is the consummate spoiler/survivor when he wants to be. No doubt in my mind he could lose over the distance widely to just about anybody, ever.
i think that backs up the points burt makes more than anything. You want to send MIKE TYSON back to emulate Dempsey, perhaps even eclipse him. Tyson was a "killer" too. A great fighter its not like you'd send back jimmy young or Renaldo snipes and expect much satisfaction
It never ceases to surprise me when die hard fans of older generation heavyweights refuse to factor huge differences in size to any degree. It clearly does not make all the difference and almost every match up is a bit unique as styles make fights ... however it does need to be considered .... I have no idea if a 188 pound Dempsey beats a 230 pound McCall if both were in their primes ... forty pounds of muscle and size is a lot to give up against a fighter like McCall who could be very tough on a given night ... however, Oliver took absolute bombs from Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno , two guys that were much bigger and likely hit harder than Dempsey ... I just don't see Jack stopping Oliver ... that being said his como of speed and power would not be ignored either ... just doubt he could keep it up against a much bigger guy over many rounds.
Hmm if Mcall can Tyson and Lewis best shots, i dont see Jack damaging him but then again, this is boxing, ANYTHING can happen
why are people quick to give McCall credit for taking Tyson's best shots ? Yes, i do believe he sparred hundred rounds with Tyson and was never floored. But champions like Tyson are different level again when you put them in the real fight, with the real gloves, minus the headgear. For 12 full rounds. That's where they produce their "best shots". on the other hand, i give McCall credit for having a genuine iron chin and wouldnt insist that anyone could knock him out or even down. But there are lots of guys who SPARRED with Tyson. Glenn McCrory was boxing hundreds of rounds with a prime Tyson when McCall was too. And i'm sure he wouldnt have been employed or stayed around long if he'd been getting decked every round. But i can't see McCrory lasting 2 rounds in a fight with Tyson.
those four were all great champions. yes Tua would be "interesting" (... in just about any era where he doesnt have to plod through 12 rounds against the superior Lennox lewis. whether he does any better we cant say)
That's just the point H E ! Dempsey had his greatest success against the BIG BOYS such as Morris, Fulton, Willard ,Firpo etc. You and others fail to realize that Dempsey and a Louis also, was like a tiger fighting a water bufalo, though they weighed less their greater handspeed and unusual power offset differences in weight. Look at their respective records and you will see that size meant nothing to them as well as Langford, Greb, Fitz, Walker, Armstrong,Jack Dillon etc. Nat Fleischer often wrote that a great HW of 200 pounds is big enough to ko any man if he had the right stuff. Well Dempsey and Louis, [Buddy Baer, Carnera, Simon,] both had the "right stuff ". Cheers.
