I was looking at these clips of Jack and noticed that while he punches were nice and short and hurtful, that his gloves were small like MMA gloves adding to the impact, it didn`t look like he had to put much weight into his shots, would his power have translated well using modern sized gloves?

It would be like a powder puff tickle from your girlfriend.

Olde Tyme = bad and undeveloped ath-e-lete.

Jack Johnson was a beast. They don’t make fighters like that any longer. What a talent and as tough as they come. No fear in Jack Johnson.

Regarding punching power you need to know more of those times. Yes gloves were smaller but other equipment impeded punching power. Shoes were leather soled and very slippery. Very difficult to pivot heavily into blows without throwing oneself off balance.

Johnson did not hit punch for punch like Jeffries or Willard but he could bang.

    Of course.
Look how he manhandled Burns, not just in the clinch but with his rushing attacks.
Look what he did to Ketchel.
Look how he snaps Jeffries head around with inside punches.

    The man could hit.

    Yes.

All the available research indicates, that glove size makes next to no difference to the impact of a punch.

There is also some evidence that head gear does more harm than good!

No his punches were short and sharp, I just don`t know if he was big enough.

No, smaller gloves do give punches more impact, you can see that inMMA fights, they don`t punch with much snap and opponents drop much easier than in a boxing match, an MMA fight can end at any minute.

And? MMA fighters aren't as skilled punchers either, partly because it MMA. Imagine GGG in 4 oz gloves?

And smaller gloves are actually better for the opponents brain, and worse for your hands.

    What evidence is that?

I would think that being able to punch someone with smaller gloves with less padding around the knuckles would be far more conductive to opening cuts and breaking small bones.
