How can a domination of a guy who is regarded as the top contender not be regardede as an impresive win, never mind three dominations of him?

Wow, this breakdown is very telling. I must admit when speculating I adjust for the difference in era's by blowing up the older guys to allow for the increase in size over time. For what it is worth the average american male in 2012 is about 2 inches than his 1912 counterpart.

Tyson did not lose as a pro at 19 or 20. And McVey was no Mike Tyson! I said there is no such thing as a great win over a 19 year old figher, as McVey was when Johnson beat him.

Before or after Martin defeated him, and he quit for a year? Martin was McVey's best win, but that is not enough for top 3 in the time line.

If we are talking skills, YES it does. McVey in his near prime on flim likely had more skills than he did at age 19. I think that is a given.

No one felt Johnson beat an all time great when he beat a 19, 19, and 20 year old Sam McVey. If you disagree, show me a paper that says this, and I will do a 180 degree turn on this point.

In regard to McVey and Johnson, it is doubtful if either of them has any claim to championship class. Both are young men as far as ring experience goes. Neither of them has done anything to entitle him to be considered at this time as being made of championship material. Johnson is the best known of the two. He has not shown himself to be anything like a champion. His principal contests have been with McVey and George Gardner. In neither of these matches did he win out decisively. Johnson has been seen in the East, and while he has been praised as a clever boxer and a fairly good big man, he would not be backed very heavily to beat a man of Jeffries' calibre. He boxed Sandy Ferguson, and the REd Haired Boston Boy stood him off for ten rounds. Later Ferguson boxed Johnson a six-round draw, the match taking place in this city, and Johnson did not impress the patrons of the game as being a coming champion, although he had made a good impression here by the rapid manner in which he disposed of Joe Butler on a previous visit. McVey has never been East. He is said to be a fast and clever boxer, who is game and can hit hard. He will have to show more than he has done so far, however, before he could induce anybody who is posted on the game that he is a man whom Champion Jeffries need be afraid of in the ring. -Philadelphia Record- Aug 30, 1903 http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...=2636,4753816&dq=jack+johnson+sam+mcvey&hl=en

Seriously folks, and Adam included, review this footage and tell me that there is some magical skill set being displayed. There is really bad footwork, terrible attempts at jabs and a general willingness to lower the bar regarding engagement and just swing wildly inside.

I saw a couple nice things that appease me, some lead rights maybe? Just a bunch of horrible jabs- some stepping in with left extended 2 paces- and withdrawing in a straight line. I am sure these guys, given their mettle, would have made good fighters with real training, but this footage is just horribly embarrassing when compared to modern ELITE heavies. I give them all the credit for their day, but compared to today's ham and eggers, it's utter shite.

McVey's "post of the month", as good as it was, was clearly let down by the final comment:

No, just no, let's be serious here. No top 10 fighter today would be a journeyman almost 100 years ago. Come on, show some perspective at least. :-(

Why would they comment, when they can read a newspaper report on the fight instead and pass it off as the "film was bad" :yep. Your reaction is no different to Jim Jacobs' when he was building his great film collection, so you're in solid company. Thankfully, boxing got so much better since.
