I would not consider his whiping any of those guys a significant argument in my favour.

If a problem happens at that level, then my argument is in trouble.

Favo(u)r is inconsequential. Who really knows? There are so many variables between his era and the current. He could potentially look like a slob or a world beater. My position is that little of what he did really makes for a lock either way.

None of this takes away from him being A Great of the sport. He is among the 10 most important boxers in the sport's history, probably in the top half of that 10.

He produced a list of 15 men three of whom Johnson never fought.
Bigger men than himself that Johnson fought
    .
    Mcvey
    Griffin
    Klondike
    Moran
    Willard
    Johnson
    Jeffries
    Wright
    Hartwell
    Lang
    Ferguson
    Harris
    Martin
    Felix
    Simmons
    Thompson

    Do you understand that?

And he lost to Willard, had a dubious draw with Johnson, Jeffries was corpse... Outside of Willard and maybe McVey, the rest, in the state he met them, are not the most frightful bunch. Again, his greatest victories were over the smaller lot: Burns, Jeanette, Langford, Ketchel...

A quick check of his record reveals two fights in the 30s, both against a Mr. Brad Simmons. The first Simmons won on points, the second:
Before that fight Johnson was 0 for 5 in his last 5 fights.

From his 1924 fight against Homer Smith:

From his 1923 fight against Jack Thompson:

Who you tryin' to kid, son?

I don't dispute that he used Hopkinesque tactics, but he was still a serious problem for these guys as an old man!

Even Larry Holmes wasn't doing that at the same age!

You seriously expect me to believe this magnificent stallion wasn't still champion in the 40s with these slick ass moves?

He lost to Willard when he was 37 years old being in front in tropical heat after 20rds.

He had a little thing like a broken arm against Johnson.
There was nothing dubious about the decision, the champion, who was nearly 36 and had been out of the ring for over a year and a half ,finished stronger against a younger ,stronger, heavier, more powerful opponent whilst fighting under the handicap of a broken arm.

How about the state Johnson was in when he met them? Johnson was a man in his 40s against some of those opponents.
What was small about Jeannette he was 196lbs of muscle?

McVey outweighed Johnson by up to 25lbs in some of their fights. Johnson fought every decent opponent that would meet him when he was on the way up, he didn't get his chance at the title until he was 30 years old. If he missed anyone it was because they didnt want the fight. When he was in exile he offered to fight McCarty in Canada. Burns the promoter turned it down. he three times signed to fight Jeannette when he was champion only to have the fight vetoed by the authorities. He signed to defend against Langford but when the NSC only offered £3000 with Johnson to pay his own travel expenses he pulled out.No one in the US would promote a heavyweight championship fight between two coloured men. Tales of him quitting against Klondike are bull**** George Siler who was ringside states Johnson had no food in him and was floored by a body shot, he had Klondike down early but his energy left him as the fight went on,its easily verifiable,I've posted the accounts a couple of times myself but the poster who keeps repeating it has no interest in the truth .

This was filmed a year before Johnson was killed. Do you want to look at footage of Joe Frazier trying to spar at 67?
    You're pathetic.

Jack Johnson was sacked as a sparring partner for Luis Firpo because he made him look foolish Tex Rickard said," he will kill the fight".Johnson beat Pat Lester over 15rds when he was 46years old Lester was 6'3.5" 225lbs

Johnson was 48 years old when he lost those fights.

A few points if I may. Some feel Johnson quit vs Klondike as reported in two books. Klondike for his part could hit. So could Choynski, Smith, and Willard. Chins are best tested when they are hit hard, and I think Johnson was a tad chinny.

Johnson had 23+ recorded fights, and many battle royals before he meet Choynski. And he was boxing for far more than 3 years.

Box Rec is a great tool, but can leave a lot of holes on older fighters.

This data seems to be correct. To add a bit Jim Battling Johnson was a big guy, and based on the NY Times news read and other stuff I have seen, Jack Johnson was lucky to get the draw.

Still all things consider, ages, Being over 60 ete. ete, both look pretty impressive here, Johnson still could move like he did in the fight films of his title fight, yeah its all in good fun, but it shows how great of a fighter was imo Johnson was almost 40 or so years pre dated the sparing.

The sport has change in the last 100 years, hell we no longer have 15 rounders, just 12 rounds and less, I not sure how Johnson would do today, but either way he was great, a legend, and a hofer as he should be. I do enjoying watching what ever film is on em, prime or not.
