If a unbeaten Gerry Cooney challenged Jess Willard for the title ,could big Jess out last and tire him for a latter round stoppage? Put the fight at 40/rounds . Or are we talking early ko by Cooney ?
Yeah Willard could outlast Cooney if he could avoid being hit for the first 10 rounds or so. Can’t see that happening though.
If Willard survive s the initial Cooney dangerous first few rounds then Jess has it .By the time it gets into the 14 th round then Cooney is absolutely gassed . By the 16 th Willard is hitting him at Will.
Cooney would break him like jack did, even prime Willard wouldn' last 4 rounds against cooney. What' with you all shitting on Cooney? Sure he was a one handed fighter with a mediocre jaw that mostly fought expired opponets, but he had one hell of a left hook and foreman said he, Lyle and cleveland williams were the hardest hitters he ever fought or sparred with. I' give Willard and advantage in stamina and punch resistance though. It was impressive that he kept getting back up after taking the worst beating in boxing history.
Willard i n my limited knowledge ,was a tough durable guy , he kept getting up from Dempsey s on slaught when most would have said **** it .But cooney wouldn't have been throwing the array of punches that Jack was .So he'd have maybe gotten through the first few rounds by hanging on , clutching cooney .If he could then he takes him deeper in to the fight.,, Cooney would be all out by the later rounds .That's when Jess would step up .
Jess had one hell of a chin and alot of heart, but people forget how explosive Cooney was, Jess had a stand up chin out style that was very easy to hit, he had an iron chin unlike Cooney but he's going to take too many shots from a guy that hit harder than jack.
