Would Joe Calzaghe Go Through Nigel Benn And Chris Eubank's Resumes Undefeated

Well "Bulldog24" seems to be saying identical things as "atberry"

 

Eubank fought a great list of fighters - Collins, Benn, Calzaghe, Thompson, Rocchigiani, Watson to name a few

 

I don't recall any of them unleashing a such relentless barrage of lightning quick power shots on to his iron dome like Calzaghe did.

I also liked Eubank's comment walking out of the ring, something like "now we know why Steve Collins didn't want to fight him"

 

Try watching the Eubank/Watson II fight then. Eubank was 90% better against Watson than against Calzaghe and Watson did far better than Calzaghe managed.

 

Maybe not as fast and often, but plenty of them got through. Eubanks bravery against Thompson was amazing, with his closed eye against a much bigger stronger fighter

 

You could see a look of shock on Eubank's face when Calzaghe was hitting him.. I think it had a lot to do with his quick hands, that actually had more power than he was thinking.

 

It was a non-fight, with Eubank taking it on 11 days notice, losing 20lbs in seven days and having no southpaw sparring and knees bad enough that he couldn't do any roadwork. He was also training himself and on his own in camp. Very hastily put-together. Calzaghe looked wildly awful for the most part..

 

He was expecting an easy nights work :yep 3 rounds, tops. He hadn't even seen Calzaghe fight before atsch

 

He really had not seen Calzaghe fight before?


What do you make of his comment as he was walking back to his dressing room... "So that is why Steve Collins didn't want to fight him, good fighter"

 

Watson was a perpetual wrecking machine against Eubank the second time, closing the gap constantly to unleash blistering clusters of power shots from different angles to head and body, including a very effective short chopping right that he couldn't miss...walking through Eubank's counters and never tiring or looking sloppy; until brain-damaged. He was unreal, close to unbeatable in fact.

Against McCallum, Watson used those pressure tactics but was tying himself up in knots focussing on defense and falling short with rights due to ring-rust, and against Eubank the first time, there was always a gap between himself and Eubank due to Chris' ring intelligence, which suited Eubank. He brought it all together perfectly on his tragedy night though, and was simply better than Joe Calzaghe.

 

He hated Collins. Still does, IMO.

 

I was speaking on Calzaghe's hand speed and power that he had then but lost later in his career. I don't remember anyone landing on Eubank that often with hands as quick as Calzaghe's.

 

Watson landed more often. Total masterclass, in-close with short shots at the pace of a lightweight, and so focussed he was walking through Eubank's best shots without blinking. It was a masterpiece from Watson. Calzaghe was sloppy, wild and shitty against Eubank. He did have a pair of quick, heavy hands, though, and an abnormally wide stance that night, and Eubank hated southpaws even when he prepped for them!

I am an American nearing my 30's.. So i admittedly am not as familiar with all of Eubank's fights as you are, but from the ones I have seen and remember, Calzaghe's performance certainly stands out.
