Calzaghe wouldn't loose to the ancient finished version of Holmes Eubank fought or Thornton the post man.

 

Thornton would find the Calzaghe chin frequently with his sneak right hand, and had the power to one-shot you.

Lindell looked very dangerous against Eubank, better than he had since the Tate fight.

 

The point that isn't clear is whether Calzaghe is expected to go through Eubank and Benn's respective resumes at a similar point in his career that they did, or whether it's a prime Calzaghe against the names on their records.

If it's the latter, than he would be favoured against everyone outside of McClellan and Thompson. Either a McClellan KO or a Calzaghe decision could realistically happen, depending on whether the G-Man landed early or not. With Thompson, we don't know how effective Calzaghe would be at that weight, fighting a significantly larger and stronger opponent. The temptation is to favour Calzaghe considering how much success Eubank had and the problems Thompson had with Nelson's speed. It really is an unknown though, and some fighters move up in weight better than others.

If it's the former, there are potentially more banana skins:

• Green Calzaghe against a well-schooled Watson (Benn)
• Shot Calzaghe against Collins x2 and Malinga (Benn)
• Fighting 6 times in a calendar year against decent opposition (Eubank)

 

Cazaghes biggest problem was his disingenuity. He was happy to con his Welsh fans into watching him struggle with bums for years rather than face challenges abroad on the pretence that he was afraid of flying.At the end of premature stoppages he would laugh and pose for the camera as if he'd just beaten Muhammad Ali, with not a hint of remorse for his conning and lying.


Though lying and conning seems to be a feature of many stars today, hardnut throwbacks like Benn and Watson might prove too much for him for wearing their hearts on their sleeves and bringing it genuine into the ring.

I think your dislike for Calzaghe may have gone a bit too far now.
I liked Francis but did you ever see how Calzaghe KOd him not that long before when amateurs, with Liles, Calzaghe KOd the fighter who KOd Liles, Wharton was a world class fighter but I can think of 2 fighters Wharton lost to that Calzaghe beat

Calzaghe didnt go life and death with Brewer, but it was a good fight, but I dont think you can take too much from that as Calzaghe could always do enough to win as proven before when he beat Reid who was blown away by Lacy only to find Lacy wasnt going to beat a fired up Calzaghe, or how Veit had no problem dismantling Brewer in impressive fashion only to be stopped by Calzaghe.

Thornton was a B level who lost to every world class fighter he faced Collins, Toney, Eubank, and RJJ just like he would to Joe also. And yes Holmes started well against Eubank but his 36 year old legs soon slowed down. He was finished and past his prime end of story.

 

Francis was a kid against Calzaghe, he developed into a much better pro. Francis also lost to David Starie at the ABAs and look what happened when they met as pros - far more impressive against Starie than Calzaghe looked against him. Also far more impressive against Cornelius Carr than Steve Collins looked against him.

Wharton would've made Calzaghe quit with body shots, probably.

Liles was at his best in '96, not when Mitchell got him. Sanderline Williams was better than the Liles that Mitchell fought.

 

He's right, though. Watson was fantastic against Eubank until Chris landed his Hail Mary right uppercut. I have never seen anyone dominate Eubank like that, even Joe.
