Would Joe Calzaghe have been better with diff trainer??

How does that work then? The reason he's criticised is because he stayed at home and defended that pathetic title of his against nobody's for his entire career.

 

To be fair i think Enzo done well with Joe, he always came to the fight in-shape and rarely had a bad night.

Other trainers would have tried to get Joe to abandon the style that has served him well for a more conventional style. I thought Joe was made on this style of quantity and high conditioning.

 

No I don't think so. Enzo and Joe were very close, it was a special relationship. They got out at the right time, at the top with everything intact.

I think Joe was happy with what he did and how he did it.

Look at Manny Steward's stable a year or 2 ago. He had Cintron, Lee, Banks and Wald. He was getting the best out of Wald not getting a lot out of Cintron and Banks and Lee are still relatively un-proven. Yet he has Wald at the top of his game

 

Aside form Kessler and Hopkins, who did he fight that was top level? I'm not talking about "dodging" anyway, just that it was a weak division for most of the time he was in it and that that should be factored in when you're determining his "atg" status. Calzaghe was a good fighter, no question, but his record is thin.

 

Joe was a homeboy and his father knew how he ticked and Joe and him come through the hard times together. I think Joe contemplated leaving his dad but in the end he did right thing...because he may of lost his edge if he did. It's all about the trainer and fighter clicking and understanding each other...many father son partnerships fall apart but Enzo done well with Joe. With a different trainer who knows....maybe if he had a different trainer in his early days he could of been better....but Joe wasn't half bad under his dad that's for sure.

 

He won the vacant title against Eubank who had every right to contend the vacant title along with Calzghe because he had held it for years. Steve Collins retired and so the title was vacant.

How can you say the WBO title is pathetic?

Hearns, Eubank, Collins, Calzaghe between 1988 and 2008. Thats four fighters to have held that title in 20 years.

I cannot remember how many Beyers, Ottke's etc have held WBC and the WBA/IBF straps at 168lbs, dozens probably. Calzaghe has always been the best.
