Would John L Sullivan be a champion today?

I'd like to know how tall he was & how much he weighed :think

 

He would be terribly ill-equipped to deal with this ruleset I imagine.

 

I'm reading a great book on Louis-Schmeling Flea. Johnson picked Sullivan to beat Louis....mind you, he used to pick against Louis quite often!

 

Jealousy perhaps?

 

I'd guess. Johnson was the only black HW champ up until that time.

 

Do you know if he tried to plug Dempsey as well?

Y'know, go for one of the champs before him and one for after him.

 

He always said he was coming for Dempsey when he got out of exile ("I'll teach this Dempsey fellow a lesson") but it never came to anything. He was well past it by then and I doubt White America would have given him another chance at the title if he wasn't.
