Cheers Gaz.:good My two cents: don't think John L. would last very long with the Klits under the modern rules. They would beat the **** out of him from long range, and cover up when he was in close. He might have better luck against any of the best of the rest who enjoy a tear-up, but thats about it. This all depends on a decent transition on his part to the modern rules. Of course it really is a pie in the sky type argument though.
Exactly:huh What the **** is a relatively tiny John L gonna do against that jab is being smashed into his face constantly? Get close, I hear you say. And when he gets close, Wlad will just drape his massive frame over the top of him until the ref splits it. Not pretty, but its part of the modern game.
Yeah mate, mythical match ups are fun but you are virtually talking a different sport back then. Sullivan had a lot more in common with Mace, Mendoza, Cribb and Sayers than he did with Ali, Louis, Tyson etc.
30 round fights, 4 ounce gloves and weighed in two hours before the fight I think that he would have a shot at modern cruiserweight greatness.....first person to mention modern day nutrition or training techniques is a **** BTW (He always comes over as a bully boy, fighting men much smaller than him, so, who knows)
If Sullivan had access to modern day McDonalds meals, Chinese takeaways and kebabs he'd be a 220lb Man of Steel.
Sorry lads, I was just playing devil's advocate above. It really is a nothing argument. Maybe John L would be a Tyson-esque force at HW these days or maybe he'd be another Chauncy Welliver. Who can say for definite? He fought many generations ago, and under a different set of rules. Its unfair to drag him into the modern era in this way, just as unfair as it would be to drag someone like Wlad back to John L's era and make a comparison.
If you look closely at the chin fungus you will notice a preponderance of ginger (obviously to my shame)....the barren crust is choice rather than nature :thumbsup
