If Kessler did like most fighters with 2 belts, refuse to fight outside and the best in there prime, then Kessler wouldnt have lost to Calzaghe 1 of the best p4p at that moment. At this time before Calzaghe, Kessler where looking very good. Instead of fighting Calzaghe and ruin his career, he could take a couple of belts in MW and LHW.. And that would NOT be a problem. So Kessler could easy become a world champion in 3 divisions. But instead he took the trip to Calzaghes homeland and took his first loss. Then he has promoter problems for a couple of years. And bam he takes on another top 5 p4p in Ward. Okay he didnt know this. But IMO Kessler took all the wrong desissions. If Kessler had a good trainer and promoter, Kessler could be top 3 p4p today. Kessler could beat Pacal, Froch, Abraham, Taylor, perhaps even Bute in 98, and all the nonames with belts in MW, SMW, LHW like Stiegliz today.
Take away calzaghe and he still go whipped by ward, where he lost a very close fight to joe. We could do ifs all day. Take away calzaghe take away ward and you get sven ottke. Kessler would have made top three if he had beat calzaghe. But he still would have lost to ward. As much as it pains European fans, truth is ward is simply a much better fighter then kessler even moreso then joe.
The point is that if Kessler had done like Ward... and refused to travel outside his own country then either the fight would never have happened or it would have ended differently. Remember that Kessler has never lost at home, just like Froch. So fighters who never leave home obviosuly have a much better chance of never losing. When Kessler-Calzaghe happened many if not most reporters saw Kessler as the best of the two, and since Kessler had just beaten the no. 3 in the division Mundine abroad, he did not have the criticism that Calzaghe had. So if he had never travelled (like a Ward etc.) then he would most likely be undefeated still.
Isn't it his dad who is English? I think he's grown up with his mother and his English isn't particularly good (for a Danish person). If he had grown up with a native speaker, it stands to reason he would be fluid in the lingo. Anyway, Kessler could have made it into the top 5 p4p at several junctures in his career, but has just fallen short. Ha he beaten Calzaghe he would have belonged there, imo, and if he had won the super 6 he definitely would be up there as well. If he had had better luck with injuries I could still have seen it happen, but he isn't active enough anymore and will most likely never get there.
Kessler was not the same fighter as when he fought calzaghe. Older and on the back of a lay off. I take it you think that ward would have beaten calzaghe? Remember that calzaghe had also began to decline slightly at that point.
No I don't think his competition would have been up to it, his best wins were past prime Beyer and Mundine, both been beat before
