Would Manny Pacquiao have gone this far in his career without Freddie Roach?

For every great fighter, there is a great coach and team behind him or her, and the people before. This is not exclusive to Manny Pacquiao, but any great fighter, such as Juan Manuel Marquez, Roy Jones Jr., Marco Antonio Barrera, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Joel Calzaghe, Erik Morales, and etc. A boxer doesn't accomplish great things without some help, or even great help. Ultimately though, it is the boxer's responsibility to become a great fighter. He or she must be willing to train hard, learn new skills and technique, and make good decisions including choosing the people around him.

of course not. manny admitted it. he scouted his potential training team in the US during the early days. then he likes the style in wild card gym not knowing it was the legendary fred roach. so it was a match of style.

no disrespect to other good trainers. but it was the chemistry that did it.

I'm surprised this answer took as long as it did.

Pacquiao said that several trainers rejected him when he first came to the US and only Roach accepted him. Imagine what they are thinking now. :)

Highly doubtful. The great thing about those two is their respect and commitment for each other. Roach didn't really overhaul Pac's fighting style, he just fine tuned it and added stuff here and there to make MP what he is right now.

I don't know, Steward from the outset always mentioned on HBO broadcasts Pacquiao's weak points and mistakes so much one would think he would have flatly rejected Pacquiao had he managed to be in Roach's shoes when Pacquiao and his manager walked thru the doors of Wild Card.

I guess Roach was one-in-a-million himself when he was able to reach out to Pacquiao thru the layers of hangers-on, parasites and opportunists and basically guide Manny in dumping his local manager and Murad Muhammad for a better arrangement with another group. Would a Manny Steward have the time of day and gumption to make that kind of move?

Overhauling Manny's unorthodox style would not have been a good idea, or even possible considering how long Pac has fought like that and how he's gotten it to work.
