I dont think era would make much difference. Rocky was a box-office attraction, and made for exciting fights, and was a champion, or contender who took part in big fights. Referees (in the modern era) are always more hesistant to disqualify popular fighters who are entertaining the crowd. In a big money heavyweight title fight it is hard to get disqualified, esp. if you have a reputation as a crowd favourite. Tyson had to bite Holyfield TWICE in a most outrageous way to get disqualified. And look at all the other fouls Tyson committed even in his prime, which were mostly just ignored by refs and commentators. Bowe, Lewis, Foreman have committed some outrageous fouls, regularly, and got away with it. Holyfield fights rough, Holmes was no angel. None of these guys ever got DQ'd.
Why Marciano? Ali cheated every minute of every fight he had in the 1970's. Larry Holmes threw the best elbow in the game. Lennox Lewis made a career out the "hold the back of the head and uppercut combo".
Nat Fleischer defended Marciano against the foul charges. In his editorial the issue after the fight he said that Marciano hit low twice and Cockell once. Marciano butted Cockell once and Cockell butted Marciano three times. "Like Rocky, Don was super-aggressive in most of the rounds. He often rushed forward, attacking Marciano's body and as often happens when two eager fighters are moving toward each other at a rapid gait, Don collided three times with his foe. Once he was warned for fouling." Later, Fleischer made a rather strong statement. "Talk of Cockell's losing the fight in San Francisco due to the tactics employed by Marciano is the bunk. He didn't have a chance and he and the entire entourage that accompanied him from England knew it. "Let's face facts and forget alibis. I'm sure Cockell realizes that whatever violations of the rules Marciano committed were unintentional, as was the one for which he was warned." Fleischer pointed out that the British press scored Marciano for the "illegal manner in which he moves in for the attack, swaying low from the waist." In other words, he fought out of a crouch. This was, as Fleischer pointed out, perfectly legal in America. Many American fighters employed crouches, and none were ever warned. By the way, hitting to the back of the head was perfectly legal in the fifties in the United States. Quotes from Fleischer taken from Ring Magazine, August 1955, Pages 16-17.
Holyfield did more than just a headbutt or two. He is the king of headbutts, it was like he had a 3rd arm. Look at the massive swelling his head did to Hasim Rahman. And Tyson is wasn't lying about all of the butts he was taking in the rematch. Evander wasn't too kind to Dokes either, and he was very dirty to Dokes in this clip here: [yt]n3oyrq4Q5gM[/yt]
Do belive people are over blowing the cuts thing. Outside of Marciano Charles II(A foul cut by a elbow) Marciano was never close of being stop by cuts. I mean Diaz had worse cuts than a normal Marciano fight, vs Pac. And he went on until he was ko.
Do you have the complete report from Fleischer?? Also, I would like to read a report that mentions the English view on Marciano's manner way of attacking. I mean some of there English fighters fought out of Crouch, Turpin comes to mind, but no one got on to Turpin for that illegal move in ENGLAND I might add vs Robinson.
Well, I've noticed that the English were accusing Marciano of a foul everytime he landed a punch, and they were being overly hard on Marciano, while the Americans were probably being too lax about it. There were exagerations on both sides and both sides were being very bias.
I dont think so Holmes used elbows and thumbs, Ali held behind the neck, Lennox used his head vs Vitali and There are many other dirty fighters like Sam Peter's back of the head shots. Marciano always found a way to win and that was one of the best traits he had dispite the fact that he was a brutal puncher with great stamina, solid chin and heart and a Rythym breaker to boot.
Yes, I have the magazine. I'm not going to try to type up the whole thing though. If you have a specific question, I will try to answer it.
Just want the English said about Marciano's bob and weaving as a foul is all. And mostly how they harp on Marciano for that, and praise Turpin for same tactic.
