Would Max Baer give Ali a tougher fight than Chuvalo did in '66?

I voted yes, but I think Ali would win.

    I'll be the idiot.

Baer, when in the mood, had a style that would have given Ali some problems. He was the swarmer, brawling type, and had tremendous power. His size would have benefitted him as well, since he was 6'2" and over 200 pounds. But Ali would win, Baer, even at his best, and in the mood to destroy a man, was sloppy as hell.

Myself, I couldnt imagine the multi-millions of dollars the two men could have generated. Baer was a natural clown and show man, and we all Ali loved to run his mouth, pick rounds and recite poetry. It would have been the biggest fight in heavyweight history.

he certainly had power that exceded that of Chuvalo's and for that reason he might have landed a shot that could have resulted in a knockdown. Other than that though, I think Chuvalo was better in most other departments. If we study both on film, George threw straiter puncher and kept his guard closer to his head and body. What's more, although both men had proven chins, I think Chuvalo's was better. George went the distance with a prime Ali twice. I think Max might get cut up pretty bad in there.

While Chuvalo is not worthy to be mentioned in the same sentance as Baer I do think that he posed a worse stylistic probley for Ali in many ways than Baer would.

Baer was more of the slugger type than a swarmer so not quite the right tools to beat Ali.

And yes Baer would put a beatdown on Chuvalo and probably stop him.

Pick another sport to talk about.
You know absolutely nothing about the art of boxing.

    Absolutely.
Baer may have been the more entertaining , but skill and disipline he did not have.
George would beat him for sure.

Ali would make bear look like the clown that he was known for being, it would be no contest. Also, I don't understand the big deal about the chuvalo fight because ali didn't fight as hard as he could have. He loafed in some of his fights.

Guys like Baer was tailor made for Ali. He might land that right one or two times on an older Ali, but not on Ali in his prime. It was too telegraphed. Ali on the other hand would have a field day getting through Baer's poor defence.

    Justify your position.

What makes you think that George Chuvalo was technicaly better than Baer?

What makes you think that he matches up well against him stylisticaly?

I presume you wont even try to argue that he beat better oposition.

    Who knows ?

I think we'd all expect Ali to win.

But Baer was actually a very good fighter, a great puncher. He could break whatever he manages to hit.

Anyway, even Sonny Liston didn't give Ali a tougher fight than Chuvalo, and people still rave about Liston.

Mate I can understan why some people have reservations about Baer but if you are comparing him to Richard Dunn you are living in a fantasy world.

Yes he was a poor technician on paper but there were a lot of good technicians in his era and he just chopped them down. He had the power of a George Foreman or Earnie Shavers and could laugfh like an idiot while a heavyweight boxer was punching him on the chin and not care.

Most heavyweight would get themselves killed if they tried to clown around in the ring like Baer.

Now he wasnt equal to the best heavyweights of the 70s like Ali and would loose to them but if you are saying that he would loose to guys who were barely in the second teir like Chuvalo you are verry far wide of the mark.
